It's also worth mentioning Photostructure: https://photostructure.com/ Which is also doing excellent work in this space.

I had a similar issue with photos/videos and ended up building a cli app to organize everything, it has worked for my use case relatively well, still, there are uncovered corner cases. For example, this compares hashes only instead of the same photo in a different dimension: https://github.com/wiringbits/my-photo-timeline I understand that https://photostructure.com/ has a far more sophisticated dedup algorithm, which can be worth a try.

Photostructure (https://photostructure.com/) lacks a lot of features google photos has - but one of those missing features is calling the police on you. I make tiny hardware that runs it very well and supports the project too: https://pibox.io/order/photostructure Google photos is easily the best product I cannot use - maybe TikTok is a close second. But sometimes it’s worth being that stubborn nerd and fighting for an alternative - even if the alternative is a distant second.

https://PhotoStructure.com is just me, and I'm delighted daily by great user feedback. > Defining successful as a profitable business Ooooh. _That_ kind of successful. Nope, not profitable yet.

I've just discovered PhotoPrism [1] through this article, which looks like a great solution for organising my photos in my homelab/home server - which is an HP N54 Microserver (Gen 7), recently reformatted to run FreeNAS; loving it so far (previously was some Frankenstein mix of Windows Server 2012 running an Ubuntu VM via Hyper-V, with the storage being ZFS within the VM... terrible performance!) There is also PhotoStructure [2] that I like the look of, but PhotoPrism is OSS and already integrates machine learning for identifying objects in photos... yes I know I can't expect great performance out of my N54L on that front! I'm not sure it covers all your features listed, but I use PhotoStructure [1] for the 'album' side of things. It's been mentioned a bit on HN, which is where I found it. Sharing is very open for me since I'm just sharing wholesale with family, but when I need to share specific images or albums to people, I usually do it via some other way that suits them -- so if they use messages, email, google drive, dropbox, or just want to download from a webpage (eg. caddy), I'll enable that. I want an easier way to edit the comments on photos (as embedded metadata) that I haven't found yet. Any image browser where I can hit a convenient hotkey, type "Summer 2023 at the river with cousins X and Y" and move on would be great. If anyone has a suggestion I'm listening keenly! If this is built in to something on MacOS or a linux default desktop (like KDE or something I'm less familiar with), or is a small paid non-subscription app, I would buy it. > - photos: NextCloud If you don't mind horrible experience viewing photos/videos via nextcloud, go on. In my case this was unusable. Thumbnails not pregenerated even after trying (Yeah, didn't spend whole day on that issue) and generates on the fly. So viewing larger directory is... rubbish. Videos don't play as nice not to say they don't even have thumbnails. Feels like "guest book" from 2000 - no features that auto organizes stuff - just a directory with photos and you're on your own with unorganized mess of photos. How great was HN when it suggested me https://photoprism.app/ - and it really just works! Nice, performant, featureful, yet feels lightweight. Finally I can view my photos. I still use nextcloud just for sync and photoprism just has directory mounted as readonly. Still, sync from phone feels heavy along with "failed to sync" errors and just hangs doing nothing... I long to try out syncthing - but then I loose web access to documents which.. maybe someone can suggest some frontend for that? Someone also suggested https://photostructure.com/ - it looks decent, haven't tried out.

I'd recommend using a VPN (or VPN-like service) to connect to the server - it might not be as simple as Google Photos et al to set up, but is likely the most secure option Edit: from a similar comment, see https://photostructure.com/faq/remote-access/#accessing-your-library-o…

> Photostructure (https://photostructure.com/) lacks a lot of features google photos has - but one of those missing features is calling the police on you. Yet. They will be forced to implement it.

If you don’t mind closed source software, I’ve found PhotoStructure to be a little nicer. Ive found it’s the closest thing to google photos/apple photos that’s still self-hostable: https://photostructure.com/

I've been meaning to try out PhotoStructure[1] for a while now as it looks like it might just be a good place to finally put some effort into organizing my collection. Nothing is guaranteed to last forever but it looks like the author is planning ahead in this case such that even if he goes out of business, all the work I put into organizing would not be meaningless (data is stored in a sqlite db and code will be open sourced in event of business closure). I've been using the Beta version of Photostructure[0] for a while and am generally very happy with it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, no ML etc, but it's also much lighter. Running on my Synology NAS inside a docker container just fine (with ~30k photos). I also heard about Mylio[1] which looks nice, but haven't tried it. Somehow the privacy policy left me a little more concerned compared to the bold promises elsewhere. The pricing model also feels a bit off to me. Neither are open-source though. I use a non-free self hosted app called PhotoStructure https://photostructure.com/. It is currently in beta and I hope to see it grow in features in the future, mainly sharing. It feels a lot like Google Photos or Apple Photos. What I like is it presents all of my photos (which I took with my mirrorless camera) in a neat presentation with a random sample––I’ve re-discovered so many memories this way.
ForkMeOnTinder · 2023-10-05
It does exist, there are at least dozens of such tools. Here's a random one I found after a quick search. https://photostructure.com/getting-started/automatic-library-organizat… But if it's not powered by AI it won't make the news in 2023

I recently discovered Photostructure. After trying a few other alternatives, this is what I prefer now. https://photostructure.com/faq/why-photostructure/
