As soon as you begin accepting user data, all your code bugs, even those as simple as forgetting to collect some metadata you might need later, are data bugs. And to the specific point about serializing logic being considered harmful, I'm sure https://www.periscopedata.com/ would beg to differ!
Seriously, though, there's nothing wrong with using this for a presentation layer. Define a group of user-selectable client-side filters in a JSON constants document, which will have a much smaller "error surface" than defining custom filter functions. Just because it looks like JSON doesn't mean it necessarily needs to be serialized.
That said, there are a number of inefficiencies in the implementation. Certainly not production ready, but a great effort.

Periscope is a data analysis tool for data analysts that allows them to type SQL queries and get charts really, really fast. Revenue has doubled twice in the last 6 months. We have gone from jumpstarting our car to hanging on as the car races up the hill.
- In your first day you'll ship new code to production.
- In your first week you'll ship at least one customer-facing feature.
- In your first month you'll write code at every level of the stack.
- In your first 6 months you'll rebuild a major piece of the Periscope stack.

Hey! I run marketing for Periscope Data, a data explorer/dashboard product. We have a lot of customers using postgres and get compared to Looker a lot. We focus on optimizing for the analyst whereas tools like Looker focus on business users. We have a lot of features for business users, but chart creation is all SQL based.
Our site is here: https://www.periscopedata.com/ and if you have any questions, shoot me an email at [email protected].

Looks good! Could it be a free alternative for tools like Periscope (https://www.periscopedata.com/)?

(Full disclosure, co-founder of Periscope Data here.)
Periscope Data supports cross-DB joins. We cache the data in our own clusters so queries run really fast, and also so you can do things like join across databases and upload CSVs.

Others have posted some really good resources.
I paticularly like Periscope Data's blog ( ex : https://www.periscopedata.com/blog/effective-revenue-chart.html ) , they have covered a wide range of topics.
Get a public dataset and start querying for unique insights.
I would also encourage you to learn a bit of Relational Algera if you really want to improve your mental model.

Hi Hacker News! So this is where the extra activity is from :) honored to be posted.
SqlPad was something I built to scratch my own itch and was sort of a self-challenge. I haven't done much with it lately, but a few users have contributed some additions back and have been helping with the project.
Just a heads up if you explore the code - I'm not a Node.js developer by trade and this is sort of a hobby for me as a SQL Server developer/DBA.
I'm flattered by the comments here. Really inspiring to get back to work on this.
Also wanted to add - If SqlPad isn't quite what you're looking for but want to visualize SQL results check out these other projects and solutions:
