If you are willing to leverage proprietary services, you can use Panda Stream for video support. http://www.pandastream.com/ http://addons.heroku.com/pandastream For the editor, a WYSIWYG editor may better target your users, but I recommend keeping the formatting options to the bare-minimum you have already defined. Providing enough options to typeset a book is cool, but would probably distract both editors and viewers.

I'm not sure if it's the Best Way, but the Panda project looks interesting if you're willing to host on EC2 and S3: http://pandastream.com/

London, UK. Full time. PandaStream ( http://pandastream.com ) Panda makes it easy for people to transcode their videos into any format, fast. We’re a profitable SaaS business, now part of MediaCore (working to transform online video learning). A large and growing number of customers depend on our platform on a daily basis to transcode large volumes of video. We’ve got big plans to push the platform forward with new encoding technologies and partnerships. With your help we can do it faster and better. We need someone special. Someone who lives and breathes new technology. The platform is primarily Ruby and FFmpeg, along with Redis, Beanstalkd, EventMachine, and is deployed within AWS. We need someone who will be at ease with this stack, and also someone who can be relied on to manage it all within a production environment. Having a background in video transcoding is obviously a big plus ! You will be working in a beautiful offices during flexible work hours. We provide you with the setup you need to do great work (MacBook, CinemaDisplay, great chair). We also have a fantastic remote team in Victoria BC, Canada that brings the opportunity for travel. You can make a difference, in our team, and on a wider scale by contributing to related Open-Source projects. To apply, let us know about yourself, your past experience and what you see yourself contributing to our platform. Show us what you’re passionate about. Feel free to ask us if you have any questions about the…

I had a project recently that had requirements similar to what you are describing, and I went with s3 + zencoder, and it worked wonderfully. This was my first time working with zencoder, but I've used s3 a lot. What I did is send movie uploads directly to s3 via swfupload so my Rails app isn't tied up with uploads. When the upload is done I use a JS callback to set the location of the uploaded file (bucket and path) in a hidden field that gets set in the ActiveRecord model when the form is submitted. If that attribute is present at creation time, a call is made to zencoder to start the encode. Then I use flowplayer to show the encoded videos. It's a straightforward implementation, and it works well. I've been pleased as punch with zencoder, and I'd definitely recommend them. You might also want to look at http://www.pandastream.com/ ... it looks like a great alternative, but zencoder's pricing was a better match for this project.

"hey I see you played a video... here's a CTA" ... there are some alert()'s lying around in your "cases"... guessing they were meant to be removed :) Is the USP here the video recording? If I was comparing to services like zencoder, transload.it, pandastream etc [1] http://zencoder.com/en/ [2] https://transloadit.com/ [3] http://www.pandastream.com/

As far as I'm aware (I'm friends with the founders) they have hired someone to run New Bamboo (Rails Consultancy) and have also merged their other SaaS product Panda (http://pandastream.com - Video Encoding) with another US company. So the founders full focus is on the Pusher product. Most, if not nearly all investors tend to want you to put in professional management in a service business and spin off the product to a separate company before investing large amounts of seed capital.

http://pandastream.com/ if you want an open-source solution–of course you have to manage your own AWS services. http://www.flixcloud.com/ if you want some on-demand services with an API. They will process on put on your server/S3.
