100% this.

> Why do you not trust Ventoy?
> Ventoy is a great tool from what I’ve seen online and the use case it fills does save time and resources. However, I have some reservations about it. If I had to compromise a bunch of critical systems over a long time period, then publishing a great tool and having it tamper with your OS installation media silently would be a really good pick. At this time, I don’t trust the developers of the tool enough and I don’t have the time or skills to perform repeated audits of the software every time they release a new version.
...from the addendum to https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2023/02/15/shrinkflation/ (which was itself discussed previously [0]) - I don't have strong opinions of my own but reading this review was enough to put me off installing Ventoy the other day.

An incomplete list of things that I do as a hobby.
There have been a few posts that have sparked discussions on HN, and quite a few of them relate to the ThinkPad T430. I often jokingly say that this laptop has been a good investment in more ways than one.
Top 3 as judged by HN:
- Why I went back to using a ThinkPad from 2012: https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2022/01/09/why-i-went-back-to-using-a-thinkpa…
- Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style: https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2023/02/15/shrinkflation/

I've tried Kagi and while it is better than google these days, to be fair that's not hard with the enshitification slop that's out there.
But Kagi funds Yandex which fund the RU government, and I think it should be known to anyone looking to use it.

Just be aware that a small percentage of your money would be going to the Russian government: https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2025/07/17/kagi/

There was a recent "why nextcloud feels slow' submission. Submission itself seemed off-course, to not really have analyzed the problem well (picked a pretty conventional a-priori whipping boy of bundle sizes). To me the clear winner in the comments was pointing out that there are massive waterfalls of fetching data to the client. https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2025/11/03/nextcloud-slow/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45799860
This data architecture problem burns you whether you are native or mobile, is the secret boss lurking in most application development. I wonder if OpenCloud is doing better than NextCloud with their middle-layers!

Going to assume this is about their partnership with Yandex for image searching.

One thing to note is that you have to set up codecs/video acceleration stuff manually on Fedora because of legal reasons. Here's a pretty good guide for that, it also has some suggested configuration tweaks for GNOME that make it a bit nicer to use. https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2024/10/14/fedora-starter-pack/

We had this other post from the same author on HN time ago https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2023/09/07/ikea-powered-homelab/
It's about the setup of the wall.
