HACK: If you want to save all of your current slack messages, sign up for https://orbit.love, connect it to slack, and then grab the messages from the API. Not sure how much longer this will work, it takes time and they may catch on.
I do like Orbit as a user, still a relatively new product

Orbit is hiring multiple roles in engineering, product, and beyond! We're helping organizations build enthusiastic communities of technology adopters. Our community experience platform helps companies identify, measure, and improve their community members’ engagement, all while focusing on creating value instead of merely capturing it. We are former developer advocates and community builders ourselves, and now we’re creating the tools we wished we had so that others can build highly engaged communities of their own.
We are a remote-first company operating between UTC-7 and UTC+3. Bonus points for being in France, US, or UK, but as long as you're in that time zone range, we're happy to talk.

Orbit (https://orbit.love/) is hiring software engineers to build tools for developer advocates, community organizers and open source maintainers. Companies like Apollo, Nuxt, Typeform, and CircleCI use us to understand & grow their communities. Team is 3 today, 2 engineers. We have 4-5 roles open and are excited to build lots of product and APIs in 2021. Our tech stack is Ruby, Rails, React, Alpine.js, Tailwind CSS, and lots of other goodies. We're pragmatists who care a lot about making an excellent product and learning fast.
To learn more about who we are, our engineering culture, and whether this is the right place for you, read our Key Values profile: https://www.keyvalues.com/orbit. Cheers & good luck with your search.

That's not the point being made in the article, though. It's not saying marketers should do community, but rather that companies should invest in community instead of marketing for mutual benefit (members and company). The follow-on Value Creation > Value Capture piece I think makes it clearer: https://orbit.love/blog/value-creation-beats-value-capture

> I think this could and should be generalized into "Avoid surprises"
Great way of putting it. When we were considering moving our community from Slack to Discord[1], we actually did a Request for Comment[2] laying-out our rationale, and asked for comments on the doc. I think this went a long way towards building trust and buy-in around big community decisions.
