Seriously? Zed Shaw loves to rant about people. Ranting about people brought him into this tiny, niche internet spotlight in the first place. And have you even looked at http://oppugn.us/? Apparently not.

It's interesting that Wesley recommends both Dive Into Python and Learn Python the Hard Way.
Zed Shaw, the author of the latter, actually has a big rant on why he doesn't recommend Dive Into Python.

Are you sure you want to recommend "Dive Into Python"? It has some flaws, which are discussed by Zed Shaw at http://oppugn.us/posts/1272050135.html
Basically he says the book is outdated and not maintained, and has bad examples.

Valleywag was blacklisted early on, and Gawker has been too at least as long as Valleywag has been reintegrated into it. Plenty of other domains are blacklisted too: http://infoworld.com has been for some time, http://oppugn.us/ got added fairly recently, http://www.kungfugrippe.com/ got added after a (wholly justified) rant about Scribd (YC S06!).

He wrote earlier that he's basically doing both, with http://oppugn.us/ for rants, which can be contributed by other people as well, and http://sheddingbikes.com/ for more thoughtful and calmer essays.

Zed A. Shaw wrote a short critique: http://oppugn.us/posts/1272050135.html . One part of it is rather against Mark Pilgrims unwillingness to update it than against technical points.

As usual Zed Shaw brings cogent and thoughtful debate to the table.
I especially like the inaccurate[1] and racist ending.

Sorry. I posted this as soon as I got the info from a friend on IRC... I thought it was still valid. I haven't tried the code myself, since I have a lot of other books to read right now, but hoped it might interest other people.
Also, I wasn't only posting this for the "deal of the day" part: I thought it might spark some interesting discussion about the book.
Mark Pilgrim is the author of http://diveintohtml5.org/ and http://code.google.com/p/doctype/wiki/Welcome?tm=6 (reddit discussion here ).
He's also the author of "Dive Into Python", which is a well-known python book, but Zed Shaw does not seem to like it very much ( http://oppugn.us/posts/1272050135.html ), so here you go...
