For me, it is evidence that our ability to build new power stations has seriously eroded, mostly due to bureaucracy, and that we need to fix this if we want to maintain competitiveness. Consider the following graph which shows the power generation capabilities of China vs. the US during the last 40 years. https://www.notboring.co/p/the-electric-slide?utm_source=substack&… The fact that data centers need to resort to gas turbines is downstream from this bureaucratic, NIMBY-driven impotency.

Hey! Your words echo this IMO! If not, strongly recommended :) https://www.notboring.co/p/the-electric-slide

> there is actually a supersonic jet startup. A16Z hasn't invested in Boom, though, near as I can tell. A quick review of their website and some cursory googling reveals that while boom is not in their portfolio they have invested in a company developing a super sonic jet engine technology (Astro Mechanica) [1] as well as a company producing precision machine parts for aerospace (Hadrian) [1] and various other companies that intersect with the area. [3] Perhaps they wanted to invest in Boom but the deal wasn’t right or they are skeptical of that particular company or they simply never got the chance but clearly they are putting their money into this area and it’s worth researching before judging them. 1. https://www.notboring.co/p/astro-mechanica 2. https://www.hadrian.co/ 3. https://a16z.com/portfolio/ (Look under American dynamism)

I've been liking Packy's writing over at Not Boring (https://www.notboring.co/).
mmahemoff · 2021-11-19
You might like Packy M's "The Great Online Game: How to Win the Internet." https://www.notboring.co/p/the-great-online-game I think it captures a lot of the current culture with crypto and NFTs. A lot of it reminds me of when reality TV began. Suddenly we had a new class of celebrities who weren't singers or actors. Reality TV stars, famous people whose claim to fame was being famous. Circular logic. Positive fedback loops. You should "invest" in this NFT collection because look at how many other people are buying this NFT collection. Web3 is more than speculative NFTs and I expect we'll see some important things come out of it, just with a lot of surprises and broken expectations along the way.
themarmar · 2021-11-19
Yup - love how easy it is to login to web3 projects! Have you also looked into Zero Knowledge? It lets someone prove that they know or have something without giving up any information about what they know or have. Not Boring did a good piece on it. https://www.notboring.co/p/zero-knowledge

Maybe there's nothing wrong with this submission and maybe I'm a skeptic but definitely seems like a gamed submission. Submission by a new account, another new account posts that this is the best piece they've read about this game, front page in less than 30min... Also the title seems eerily similar to a good primer on the company that I had read earlier this year by twitter.com/packym that was titled, "Infinite Revenue, Infinite Possibilities." That was a super bullish piece though so perhaps the growth is tapering off as the title of this piece seems to suggest. Anyways - I'd highly recommend that piece [0] for a primer on the company and catalysts for its growth (if anyone reading this isn't familiar with this company and wants a deeper dive + more context around blockchains+games). I'm a big fan of Not Boring (https://notboring.substack.com/) and the way he mixes business strategy w/ pop culture + current events. Also like Media Operator (https://www.amediaoperator.com/) for his unique takes on business models and products. Substack's discover page is also a good place to discover free and paid newsletters (https://substack.com/discover)

Which means, the technical solutions to the questions raised in the original article this responds to, will probably not have time to be implemented before the rush is over. Especially since those solutions would reduce the influence and revenue of the biggest players. It's like trying to replace Facebook with Diaspora. It's technically possible, and going nowhere. The article lists success stories for NFTs: "Axie Infinity and how it’s bringing entire nations out of poverty"[1] Axie Infinity is a play-to-earn game. It's like Pokemon, with breeding and training and fighting, for real money. Players need about US$1500 to play, and earn Smooth Love Potion Tokens. This really caught on in the Philippines, and people were quitting their day job to play. The article was from June 2021, when Axie was on the way up and Smooth Love Token was peaking around $0.35. Axie is now a Ponzi on the way down. This morning, Smooth Love Potion Token is down to $0.01897 and dropping.[2] Since all revenue came from new players, this was inevitable. The NFT market is Axie Infinity, OpenSea, CryptoPunks, and the little guys. As with most things online, the top 3 have most of the market share.[3] Axie is crashing. OpenSea is stalling. Profitable NFT resales aren't happening much, and there's a glut of new issuers. By the time the problems Moxie points out are fixed, this is going to be over. Especially since for US players there's a 28% capital gains tax rate on collectables resold within 12…

Related - "The Electric Slide" [0] from NotBoring (a techno-optimist news letter) talks about production of batteries and other parts of the "Electric Stack", and explains where the US/China are relative to each other and the rest of the world, and why China has such a big lead. There was an interesting article on him linked from The Diff newsletter today. It seems a large part of his strengths are strategic M&A. "1. Larry Ellison has an insight which leads to a breakthrough initiative which has the potential to reposition Oracle to the forefront of the industry, completely bypassing the competition. 2. It works. 3. Larry Ellison checks out to go sailing or play tennis or something for like a year. 4. Oracle gets into trouble. New entrants and existing competitors are eating away at its market share, and Oracle is losing head-to-head.4 5. GOTO 1." https://www.notboring.co/p/who-is-larry-ellison

I'm not sure we need to replace Excel. Just need to just stop using it for things it wasn't designed for and isn't good at. <Obligatory Bart Simpson writing "Excel is not a database" cartoon> Airtable does a pretty good job of combining elements of spreadsheet and database in a package that supports collaboration. It's not going to replace Excel though. See also: https://www.notboring.co/p/excel-never-dies

Totally, outside of people trying to make a "smarter" excel like Airtable or Rows, different business units will make some "template" that lets them run their orgs in excel. Those "templates" could certainly be better products. Packy talks more about how this is also a platform being unbundled: https://www.notboring.co/p/excel-never-dies?s=r

I have trouble finding good pro arguments taking on the strongest anti- arguments, it's pretty frustrating. To rebut moxie's OpenSea monopoly criticism, one guy goes and pulls up stats from a week-old competitor that fueled their first week's performance by airdropping tokens on a bunch of nft high-rollers. Apparently they consider this ample evidence of a healthy competitive ecosystem given the amount of words they labored on the point. [0] [0] https://www.notboring.co/p/the-web3-debate

Does anyone have any thoughts on the blog post [0] linked at the end of the announcement? Is this actually how venture capitalists evaluate these sorts of things? That post feels like it approaches "conspiracy theory" levels of leaps [1] about the evolution of the product and its potential impacts from a company whose product offering doesn't really seem to have changed or expanded much in the past few years, and which feels from an outsider's perspective like it's generally being left in the dust by more modern competitors like GH's Codespaces. [0] https://www.notboring.co/p/replit-remix-the-internet [1] e.g., the CEO making vague tweets about "web3" = "Replit will be a vortex for talent, creativity, and economic activity online. It might become the operating system for the 21st Century, the platform on top of which much of the internet is built, remixed and monetized."

The only company that has found success? Umm, that was maybe true in 2012. Might want to check again. For example: * Axie Infinity (https://www.notboring.co/p/infinity-revenue-infinity-possibilities) But there are many.

Solana has had quite a month. https://www.notboring.co/p/solana-summer >Solana uses a Proof of Stake consensus mechanism plus Proof of History, a decentralized source of time that Solana Labs CEO and founder Anatoly Yakovenko told me is “the implementation of the arrow of time in math.” Sounds mind-bending, and it is, but what it means is that transactions on Solana are verifiably ordered without all nodes needing to agree simultaneously. That’s what makes it so fast. At the rate it's been growing, relative to other major coins, it could be a top 4-5 coin very soon. It currently sits right behind Binance Coin and Tether at #6. https://www.coingecko.com/en
