Just checked it out, you're right. They actually explicitly said:
> In order to do what's best for our users and the web, and not just Google Chrome, we will focus our web efforts on compiling Dart to JavaScript. We have decided not to integrate the Dart VM into Chrome.
https://news.dartlang.org/2015/03/dart-for-entire-web.html
But I guess with the adoption of WebAssembly, that won't really matter anyway.

Dart's interesting enough if I can actually use it for both Fuchsia and Web [1], but I find the following statement misleading: "Dart’s type system, like the type systems in Java and C#, is sound [2]." Java's type system is not sound [3], nor is C Octothorp's [4]. What gives?
[1] Though what happened with Chrome is a shame: https://news.dartlang.org/2015/03/dart-for-entire-web.html

We (https://www.blossom.io) are using Dart alongside JavaScript (CoffeeScript) right now.
You can call JavaScript code from Dart and vice versa. https://www.dartlang.org/articles/js-dart-interop/
This was a great pragmatic stepping stone for us as we moved from a JavaScript only code base to a much saner development experience thanks to Dart.

You are right it was. But most people do not track all issues of all projects they depend on. While I'd love to do that, there's simply not much time.
I belive this should have been in an earlier RC or Beta. This way, more people would have tested ot, ir got a chance to read changelog (I follow the blog and check each beta release). If that window was missed, it should have gone for the next major release.
What I see is that Google announced AngularDart (http://news.dartlang.org/2013/11/angular-announces-angulardart.html). Dart has _ prefix for private fields. Then AngularJS team goes ahead and forces the same on the JS implementation.
Seems that there is always some political reason to mess with things at Google.

Also it's great to see Dart's Sublime support improved:

Considering moving to Sublime for all text/script editing after finding out that it's an impressive universal toolbox with awesome packages at your finger tips in this comprehensive video:

I think a few points are worth emphasizing. Dart produces JavaScript that is closer to being correct
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5424680
Dart can produce JavaScript that is faster
http://news.dartlang.org/2013/03/why-dart2js-produces-faster-javascrip…
The JavaScript output of Dart2js works across all modern browsers (IE9 and above, among others.) No browser hacks required.
Having said that, I wish they would stop working on advancing Dart and ship a 1.0 version. It's been 1.5 years since it was announced. Make the advancements in the 1.1 or 2.0 and give the tool developers a solid target to optimize for in 1.0. Let us not have to sell clients on a beta development system, even though that's what I'm doing and it's working, despite some panic when Dart developers break things with breaking changes (which is often.)
sethladd · 2012-12-22
(disclaimer: I work on the Dart team)
Good question!
The language does not anticipate backwards breaking changes (modulo any bugs we find in the spec), though we expect to add features like mixins.
The libraries are going through changes now, especially with the introduction of the new Streams API: http://news.dartlang.org/2012/11/introducing-new-streams-api.html
The time is good to check out Dart and let us know what features you need for your next commercial project. However, with the libraries evolving right now, I probably wouldn't use Dart for something I need to ship in Q1 of 2013.
We love feedback, and there are a ton of features what work today (package manager, compiler to JavaScript, editor, etc) so we hope to hear from you soon :)

> "proprietary" is unfair, and becomes more unfair all the time now that Dart is on its way to ECMA standardization
By "proprietary", I mean only executable by one client.
I had not read about Dart's ECMA standardization process (TC52). I think that's great news, but to be fair, that announcement was made just two days ago:
http://news.dartlang.org/2013/12/ecma-forms-tc52-for-dart-standardizat…
> If Dart is "proprietary," then so is asm.js, Mozilla Persona, Rust, and many other cool things that Mozilla is doing.
I don't think asm.js, Rust, dart2js, or Go are "proprietary" because their implementations are open and their output can be executed by multiple platforms or clients. Dart source files is only executable by Google's Dart VM.
> This is exactly the kind of bad faith presumption that troubles me. Google is trying to push the web forward but in your mind their end game is to break its web properties for every browser except Chrome?
I do not think Google is plotting to create a walled garden (unlike Microsoft of the 1990s). But I think many people at Mozilla worry about future timelines where proprietary systems could be created, even if they are the inadvertent, cumulative result of different product teams' decisions.
Consider Google Hangouts. When Hangouts was launched in May of this year, it included an NPAPI plugin to support other browsers like Firefox. But now, only seven months later, the Hangouts service is very popular but is only accessible from…

IIRC Google made a version of Chrome with a Dart VM quite a while ago
https://www.cnet.com/news/googles-dart-language-arrives-in-chrome-test…
and they cancelled it ... my interpretation of their reasons are unless all browsers ship it it's a problem.

GWT served them well for 8 years. Now the Dart one is expected to last for the next 7+ years.

Dart has had some null-aware operators for awhile (https://news.dartlang.org/2015/08/dart-112-released-with-null-aware.ht… otherwise you'll need to explicitly do null checks. It's certainly not perfect, but it's still "good enough" to make handling null relatively concise. In my experience code review can do a good enough job at promoting good practices around null handling that non-nullable types are really just a "nice to have".

There's a plugin to run TCL in the browser [0]. Last update appears to be 2006 though, so I doubt it's usable on today's browsers.
There was an effort at one time to implement a Dart VM in Chrome [1]. That has been stopped, though [2].

AdWords, AdSense and internal Google CRM are written in Dart -
namely AngularDart:

Okay, thanks!
I was thinking that the decision not to ship with Chrome was very old news, but actually it was just two years ago [1]. Time flies!
Dart for the web is purely a compile-to-JavaScript language now. The last bit will be replacing Dartium with DDC [2].
The Dart VM is still around. It's used in Dart's command-line tools and in Flutter. Also, the Sass compiler is moving from Ruby to Dart. [3]

Dart is used for AdWords [0] and AdSense [1]. Both of which account for 89% of Google's revenue.
It's also used for Google's internal CRM (Greentea), and Google Fiber.

Even the original, untyped, Dart was designed to be easier to optimize that JavaScript (e.g. it's class based, not prototype based, so the runtime doesn't have t work as much to optimize object access).
Recently Dart has added a strong mode (https://github.com/dart-archive/dev_compiler/blob/master/STRONG_MODE.m… http://news.dartlang.org/2017/01/sound-dart-and-strong-mode.html).
One of the reasons for strong mode is to enable better optimizations (https://www.dartlang.org/guides/language/sound-faq#why-strong-mode).
kyrra · 2017-02-15
Eh? Dart was trying to replace JavaScript in some fashion, but that obviously failed (they had good intentions, but bad execution). Seeing that Chrome hasn't included it yet, I doubt it will. So that dream is dead.
Dart is a replacement for GWT at this point. See AdWords being written in dart now[0]. Though it's not clear now Flutter.io will play into all this (that's targeting mobile with no web target).
As for typescript, Google actually embraced that fairly heavily with Angular2 being written in it.

It appears that the new version of the new AdWords UI is created using Dart and Angular 2: http://news.dartlang.org/2016/03/the-new-adwords-ui-uses-dart-we-asked…
I'm not a heavy AdWords user, so I can't say for certain that this represents all of the AdWords UI. But based on the linked interview, it sounds like they replaced a lot of GWT with Angular.

Dart does have some momentum as well and it's younger than Go. Go's 1.0 release was at 28 of March 2012, whereas Dart's was November 14, 2013.

I am pretty sure future will have generics. Even present has them in every (semi-)mainstream language. I would approach Go very carefully. Many things Google creates it then kills (e.g. Dart is under threat already: http://news.dartlang.org/2015/03/dart-for-entire-web.html).
EugeneOZ · 2015-05-22
Google use it for the most mission-critical part of their business, I'm not sure it means "abandoned". http://news.dartlang.org/2015/03/dart-for-entire-web.html

Dart VM is an essential part of the Dart ecosystem.
Dart tools: pub's (package manager) client, analyzer, dart2js compiler, etc are all written in Dart.
We have a good story for server side developement and we are not looking to abandon it but rather we are looking to expand it, e.g. we just released a package to facilitate creation of REST APIs[1]. Pub's server side is being rewritten into Dart as we speak[2]
Among cool internal users of Dart VM I could mention Google Fiber - they'll share their experience during the upcoming Dart Summit[3].
