What HN people wrote when they linked it

If you enjoy good old grumpy bitterness like this article, you might also enjoy revisiting the classics: - https://harmful.cat-v.org/software/ - http://n-gate.com/

http://n-gate.com/ is a great (albeit acerbic and derisive) summation of HN for those interested.
slumpt_ · 2021-06-05
It's good it wasn't deleted, but disappointing that he winds up editorializing it with his quip. I've come to not expect much more from HackerNews. Sometimes http://n-gate.com/ is the best summary one can ask for.
SAI_Peregrinus · 2020-04-20
If you haven't seen it, the HN summary/parody site n-gate[0] is excellent. [0] http://n-gate.com/

I love the satirical version of this bullshit that http://n-gate.com/ uses.
therobot24 · 2019-02-12
there's going to be a great http://n-gate.com/ paragraph from this thread
LinuxBender · 2018-04-26
My favorite satire along this line is n-gate [1] [1] - http://n-gate.com/
hawski · 2018-03-20
There is http://n-gate.com/ if one wants a week's worth top stories with a bit of commentary.

Our interactions online don't happen in a vacuum. They are to a decent degree an outcome of the real world we live in. Sure, there's effects that are exclusive to the medium, like pseudo/anonymity, or related to the place, occasion and purpose of the interaction. But they are also influenced by our emotional state, personalities and life circumstances and everything that influences that in turn. When you encounter people like that (they could be bots...) ask yourself what could be going on inside their heads. Are they on a mission? Are they in a bad spot and trying to cope? Are they trying to troll for amusement, fishing for attention? A lot has been said about the internet becoming shittier and unfriendlier over time. Where it used to be (in my mind) an exuberant place to learn and meet new people or create entirely new culture, a third/fourth place outside the real world, we have seen that there's many more agendas at play. More eyeballs, surveillance, commercial interests, political influence, cheap entertainment and addiction. Too many cooks ruining the stew. How do I deal with it? Use self-moderation if possible (e.g. I filter submissions by site, user and title on HN), find side alleys like special-purpose communities, save good stuff, so you don't forget what's possible (can't rely on search/recommendation engines or the permanence of anything anyway), and don't take it too seriously. I'm lucky to have been around for some time and know some older communities that…

N-gate was so good. http://n-gate.com/hackernews/ It would be amazing to refine / fine tune a model on n-gate somehow.
neilv · 2025-12-19
It's a little bit n-gate. Who unfortunately stopped posting HN critiques, a few years ago. But you can still read old posts on: http://n-gate.com/hackernews/2021/07/ (If you follow that link from HN, and the site sees an HN `Referer`, it will do a fake captcha load, so then click "HACKERNEWS" in the navbar on the right.)
pimlottc · 2025-12-19
I miss n-gate’s webshit weekly. http://n-gate.com/ EDIT: open the link manually, they put a mock "security check" on referrers from HN
kristianp · 2025-11-29
There is plenty of sarcasm, but that's not really what the style of ngate's summaries was. http://n-gate.com/ Here's an example: > Github (business model: "Uber for README.MD") directs its employees to eat its own dog food. Because of Github's acquisition by Microsoft (business model: "Uber for customer abuse"), it turns out that what Github engineers are eating came out of the dog to begin with. Hackernews tries to figure out whether they, as customers of Microsoft's latest desperate attempt to get anyone to use Azure, have any control over their information, or whether they'd be better off remaining with their existing workstation-as-a-service provider, Apple (business model: "Uber for garden walls").

TL;DR: Do you have a stance on HN's change in culture? It seems like HN comments are shifting from technical focus toward: * Early Reddit's low-effort but tame "snark" * Aggressively moralizing posts dismissing sardonic criticism as dangerous mental illness I haven't seen much of OP's style lately, especially since n-gate[1] went inactive. I'm wondering whether that's a bad thing. Although the tone is hostile on the surface, there's usually some aspiration toward competence associated with it. [1]: http://n-gate.com/

There used to be http://n-gate.com/ ( :p, but also RIP TT )
pc86 · 2023-07-18
At least on Reddit people make jokes. At one point the most-gilded comment ever was a (honestly, pretty funny) one-line joke reply to a paragraph long heartfelt comment about grief and loss. Here it's a loose game of word association. For example, title says "GNU" in any context so we get 300 comments with unrelated anecdotes about Stallman. The comments section becomes stories about whatever random nonsense is in the top 2-3 comments. When it was being published, n-gate[0] was great at highlighting this. A good read before dismissing http://n-gate.com/software/2017/

There's also this for more hacker news satire although it sadly seems dormant now: http://n-gate.com

Bean counters have taken over. Ad in front of geek = $1 / 1000 impression. Ad in front of CTO = $10 / 1000 impressions. Then milk the cow, get the investment back and move on. Anyway https://www.theonion.com/ https://www.betootaadvocate.com/ Hopefully http://n-gate.com/ gets going again. (Type out the url, he detects HN redirects).

I was thinking about this classic article [0] that gets linked whenever people talk about HTTPS? If so, that's a 2017 flamewar. [0] http://n-gate.com/software/2017/07/12/0/ (NOTE: this site tracks if you come from HN and sets a cookie. You'll probably need to open it in incognito)
pipeline_peak · 2022-02-03
N-Gate is! They directly make fun of “Hacker” “News” and its brogrammer circle jerk bike shedding. Heads up though, their stuff up to 1-2 years ago is a lot funnier than now. Also they’re a lot less active. http://n-gate.com/
oefrha · 2022-01-11
I wonder how much an “average HN user” differ from a “Hackernews” on http://n-gate.com/.
throwawayay02 · 2021-11-14
I was searching for your question. I agree I don't know why this is in the first page... Maybe some people [1] are right when they say most of HN's audience is interested in business and technology, but not technical themselves. [1] http://n-gate.com/
giardini · 2021-07-15
N-GATE is great satire. Reading it de-pressurizes me after a week of Hacker News. And I love N-GATE's "ABOUT" link, which reminds me of a sinking ship (am I on-board?, are we ALL on-board? What's going on?8-)): http://n-gate.com/about/

1. http://n-gate.com/ 2. You sure place a lot of trust into third parties.
rmist · 2021-05-05
On a lighter note and for humor read webshit weekly at http://n-gate.com/

Never mind! Here https://www.patreon.com/ngate There's an offer of: Limited Series A (5 remaining) just €43.50 (+VAT) per month Limited Series B (7 remaining) just €431.50 (+VAT) per month or Limited Series C (1 remaining) just €862.50 (+VAT) per month Brilliant! (I must note that the circuit shown there is... somehow... inducing some negativity in me.... which probably isn't unintentional.) And the main site has an about page too, in all its glory: http://n-gate.com/about/

n-gate posted a satirical take on the line-up, for those of y'all who enjoy reading such things: http://n-gate.com/

There is n-gate [0] that summarizes top HN stories, although the tone is quite sarcastic :-) [0] http://n-gate.com
