> That's deep into 1984 or Soviet / Chinese censorship territory. Not if you consider the context of external influence, e.g. [1], and not wanting a Jan 6 in Brazil. Not letting such know their efforts are ineffective, is a tool to combat their effort. It is akin to shadowbanning. Amplification of radical right by external entities is nothing new, btw. Russia did this in 2016. Musk does it now. But Musk won't show those parts of his machine. He still does shadowbanning, too. If you are following the Indian election I found an interesting article yesterday about how bots are being deployed on social media to influence that contest. https://medium.com/dfrlab/electionwatch-bots-on-both-sides-in-india-c8…

Well, the creation of the video involved a horrific crime, but now that it's been created, there isn't necessarily additional harm in sharing it. Admittedly, there are potential harms: the more popular the video becomes online, the more it may inspire future terrorists, both to commit terrorism in the first place and to livestream it. On the other hand, though, it's always been true that regular news coverage of terrorism and the resulting wide public attention can inspire future terrorism, yet nobody has proposed clamping down on that. At most, some propose to avoid saying the killer's name in order to make the infamy less personal, but that's a half-measure at best. In particular, I bet the livestream made more impact on the public through the news using it as an additional gruesome detail to talk about than through people actually watching it. (Counterpoint: If platforms hadn't censored it as heavily, more people would have watched it, and if they had more effectively blocked reuploads, fewer.) There's also the factor that the killer knew his video would be shared and that that probably formed part of his motivation for committing the crime in the first place; regardless of its effect on future crimes, sharing his video sort of retroactively justifies his decision to commit this one, and indeed may make him more satisfied while in custody. But I don't particularly care about the killer's present level of satisfaction, and the presence or absence of retroactive…

Yeah, no. https://medium.com/dfrlab/question-that-rts-military-mission-4c4bd9f72… > RT’s parent company, TV-Novosti, is registered as a state-owned Autonomous Non-commercial Organization (ANO) with the Russian Ministry of Justice. According to TV-Novosti’s official filings with the Ministry, it is almost entirely funded by the state budget, with the exact figure ranging annually between 99.5% and 99.9%.

Corporations do do it all the time. It's called the PR industry. It used to mean placing positive stories in the trad media. Now it means placing positive stories in the trad media, and also using shills and bots to influence social media. Nation states also do it. Is this story true, or is it manufactured? https://medium.com/dfrlab/trolltracker-twitter-troll-farm-archives-8d5… Is the Bloomberg chip story true, or is it manufactured - maybe to demonstrate that the US can easily put market pressure on selected Chinese businesses? (I don't actually know the answer to either of those questions. Worldwide, only a handful of people do.) Cognitive violence and zero-trust media have become endemic. This is a problem for any democracy, because you can't have genuine democratic accountability system when mass media of all kinds are weaponised for political ends.
And where's the evidence of that? https://medium.com/dfrlab/electionwatch-russia-and-referendums-in-cata… http://www.politico.eu/article/russia-catalonia-referendum-fake-news-m… Summary: there's been some attempts, but not as well organized or concentrated as the US, French or German election campaigns.

Hi dang, Why was the parent comment wrong? There has been some speculation on Russia's involvement in the referendum [0] that was compared by some to the US election. That never happened and for people to incredulously report that it did is absurd. https://medium.com/dfrlab/russias-fake-electronic-bomb-4ce9dbbc57f8

This is sort of TikTok, right? Wasn't TikTok known for becoming viral by having tons and tons and tons of fake upvotes for everything to make everyone think TikTok was a better place to post content [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]? Facebook and Instagram had the same "problems", they just addressed it much earlier than TikTok. I would imagine they have already tested fake likes to maximize how believable the like ratio can be, but who knows - maybe there's opportunity left to be more fake? Some examples notable enough to have Wikipedia articles: * Arsen Pavlov, bomb in elevator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsen_Pavlov * Alexander Zakharchenko, bomb in cafe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Zakharchenko * Mikhail Tolstykh, rocket lauched at his office https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Tolstykh * Aleksey Mozgovoy, car bomb and ambush with machine guns https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksey_Mozgovoy Resistance mostly takes the form of hit-and-run attacks and sabotage against infrastructure. Here's a 2019 video of DNR communications facility being blown up: https://medium.com/dfrlab/blast-highlights-mgb-detentions-in-separatis… The video was posted on social media with the following message: > This was done with the goal to draw attention to the inhumane torture in the basements of the MGB. Cruel treatment and tying wires with electric current to peoples’ extremities in the “people’s” republics has become the norm. The people of the Donbas must protest against torture, or the fascist republic will remain unconnected. The very effective use of long-range weapons against targets deep inside occupied territories has also been attributed to intelligence provided by locals. Like with Kherson, we can expect detailed stories after LNR and DNR are liberated and it's safe to reveal what went on and how it was accomplished. > Anyway, what's the point of this analogy? The war in Ukraine has nothing to do with separatism.…
