Only Matrix would make sense. Here's something worth paying for if they don't want to selfhost: https://www.modular.im/ https://medium.com/@RiotChat/introducing-modular-awesome-hosting-for-r…

Yes, I in fact just installed it. They changed the text in the "search bar" present in the homescreen, which is a great improvement (it now says "filter rooms"). However this feature is only useful for really heavy users with tons of rooms, yet it's displayed front and center while the global search option which is fundamental for onboarding is still hidden. The full redesign has been postponed because they are rewriting the whole program: https://github.com/vector-im/riotX-android But this issue I'm complaining about is also present on the redesigned Riot Web. Edit: sorry, I think I'm wrong. The current mobile version seems to already be the redesign though it looks mostly the same to me: https://medium.com/@RiotChat/riot-mobile-update-brand-new-riot-im-webs… I think it still needs a lot of work.

Riot's UI could be way better (i work on it), but we're constantly iterating to try to nail the UX. We changed it a lot on Android last month though (https://medium.com/@RiotChat/riot-im-unveils-the-next-generation-of-it… so might be worth trying if you haven't recently.

Yes, the article mentioned that and that's what made me think about it; it's a different model, close to Twitter but different from other "thematic" social platforms. Matrix.org has a good model for channels (called rooms), groups of channels [1] (called Communities), and distributed identities. I only hope that Matrix.org will become the common background middleware for all federated services, and all these will tend to implement the same features for interoperability. Wire app. Not sure if Riot has a web app right now, but they plan to have one when they overhaul the UI at least: https://medium.com/@RiotChat/a-sneak-peek-at-a-whole-new-riot-im-1114d… Neither is P2P, but Riot is federated.

I'm dumb, I really don't see it in the UI. I read https://medium.com/@RiotChat/slack-bridge-improvements-44c52fb712f4 I don't see a way to "add a slack" in Riot.

I share your distrust, which is one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of Discord. I don't know where Riot's revenue will come from, but Matrix [1] (and Riot by extension [2]) support end-to-end encryption. As others have said you can also set up your own server. For those(like me) who are looking for the famous reference Implementation Vector, it got a rename[0] to Riot[1] lately. [0]Rename: https://medium.com/@RiotChat/lets-riot-f5b0aa99dc8e#.3toozs7r6 Homepage: https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/riot.html

Looks like this is a rebranding of the existing Vector app. Here's the blog post from the creators: https://medium.com/@RiotChat/lets-riot-f5b0aa99dc8e#.3toozs7r6

Just as well that we're working on it and released huge improvements yesterday! Think 70% reduction of memory use and dramatic reduction of launch time :) (https://medium.com/@RiotChat/riot-im-web-0-17-and-ios-0-7-6-smaller-fo… for the details) We're still aiming for a full redesign of Riot.im to be out before end of the year, there should be things to look at at the end of the month, all crafted for the non-techy friends, so watch de the space! And yes, the backend is not helping neither, although we've also done good progress on perf improvement there in the last months and still rolling new ones (e.g. Py3 being deployed as we speak and reducing server RAM by 3). Switching away from matrix.org can help, and agreed that a directory of public servers à la Mastodon could be interesting (although we would need to find a non-scary way to do so, lots of non-tech people would run away from it: they just want one click onboarding without having to understand what's happening behind the scenes). We've also soft launched a paid hosted offering, for 50-100 people teams who could do with their own DNS and faster servers at http://modular.im
