Erik is the author of the hugely popular '7 Rules for Creating Gorgeous UI' article [0]. He provides a free newsletter with excellent content. I really enjoy the occasional emails and recommend this newsletter to anyone interested in UI Design or Design in general.

This is an excellent pratical howto design article, given by a non-designer. Here is the summary of the tips:
- Light comes from the sky
- Black and white first
- Double your whitespace
- Learn the methods of overlaying text on images (part2)
- Make text pop— and un-pop (part2)
- Only use good fonts (part2)
- Steal like an artist (part2)

I absolutely love what you have done with the site, with the exception of the colors chosen. IMO the dark scheme is not pleasant to look at. Just read https://medium.com/@erikdkennedy/7-rules-for-creating-gorgeous-ui-part… the other day, it was a wonderful piece on aesthetics (read Part 1 first).
It seems the LinkedIn data scraper has problems with people out of the US. It fails to read my city and country.
I really REALLY like the game-ified intro. Are you using a library for those effects or are they developed inhouse? (if library: which one?)

Did you read part 1? https://medium.com/@erikdkennedy/7-rules-for-creating-gorgeous-ui-part…
From the intro:
I was a UX designer with no UI skills. I love designing UX, but I wasn’t doing it for long before I realized there were a bunch of good reasons to learn how to make an interface look nice:
My portfolio looked like crap, reflecting poorly on my work and thought process
My UX consulting clients would rather buy someone’s skills if their expertise extended to more than just sketching boxes and arrows
Did I want to work for an early-stage startup at some point? Best to be a sweeper

Erik Kennedy has an interesting hack[1] to naturally darken or lighten any color using the standard HSB color picker. He mimicks how colors generally change when shadows are cast on them in the real world—simply by twisting the Saturation and Brightness knobs in opposite directions.
I thought a lot about why that needs to happen. He describes it as an operation that is “adding or subtracting white”. Geometrically, you’re just moving the color closer or further from the white corner of the RGB cube. So I wonder if that maps close enough to moving up-and-down in the CIELAB/UV color spaces, where the Y-axis represents luminance.

There _is_ a major disconnect! You’re studying computer science and wondering how it applies to software engineering. When I studied CS (graduated a year ago) we never went over things like building a GUI, reverse engineering an API, or designing a UI. Those are software engineering topics. By the time I graduated I learned how to do those things, but it was by learning them on my own. If you want to learn these things you’ll need to take the initiative yourself.
Here are some links to get you started:

I don't think that is quite what the parent was referring to. I think it was more "space" as in "have a clean simple uncluttered UI with ample padding around the edges" (see point 3 here: https://medium.com/@erikdkennedy/7-rules-for-creating-gorgeous-ui-part… not literally a lack of spaces between elements.

Perfect day for it really with them breaking a few of the rules laid out in another top story "7 rules for creating gorgeous ui" [1]. Having non white text over a high contrast photo with skinny text certainly is bold according to the pervious article.
