I'm just going to leave this here in case people still think this guy has anybody's best interests in mind. Is it true? Is if fake? Make your own conclusions.

One of the OG devs doesn't trust it. https://medium.com/@anton.rozenberg/pavel-durov-sued-senior-tech-lead-…

Those are just stories that made it to press and that I was able to dig up quickly. Durov did visit St Petersburg from time to time, it was an open secret when I lived there.
As for the last story: I was a bit sloppy about that link, the story I was referring to is better covered here [1] (that's a disgruntled employee spilling beans).
The fact that Telegram was still being developed in that Zinger building in St Petersburg was not particularly secret either, VK'S HR was not coy about the fact when showing me around the office. I also heard the same from multiple people working in that building.

while the whole store is about on how Durov tried to sleep with authors wife and tried to put pressure on him using his work position, author did expose facts which very interesting:
- telegram office in sankt petersburg sharing same office that mail ru does (and mail ru basically is pro government org)
- telegram team still contributes to vkotankte and they do share some software components connect to online messaging
- most interesting russian oligarchs has very big influence on the products (vkontakte and telegram). While both productions trying to tell its not true, behind the doors they do have well established process of giving data when certain criterias are met

You must have missed all the very suspicious information about Durov's close ties with Russian authorities, and that Telegram developers worked from the same office with VK in Saint-Petersburg when he claimed that they are in Germany. [1]
Good choice for a dissident! (No)

A few months ago I read an article about Telegram and their related companies and individuals. [1]
The article read like a mix between a nerdy James Bond story, a bad Law and Order episode, a Mexican soap opera and a Russian episode of Cribs.
It was written by an ex-employee so I took it with a grain of salt.
Nevertheless, the article brings up a lot of red flags and shady behavior. Combined with their (alleged) connection with the Russian government, roll-your-own-crypto and the recent >billion dollar ICO it doesn't really make me all that willing to use Telegram any time soon.

That reminds me the story about how Russian counterpart of the Zuck messed with one of his developers message history:

He's not "in exile", it was bluff/PR piece. He regularly visits St-Petersburg, and the main development office was also in St-Petersburg as of a year back right next door to the Vkontakte one.
Durov is a very shady person, I wouldn't trust him with anything that you may want to keep private. Check out how a story by ex-employee of his [1], it gives a lot of backstage info.

Looks like rumors and disinformation spreaded by Anton Rozenberg - former Telegram developer. Russian journalists refer to his Facebook post[1].
IIRC, Rosenberg and Durov had some serious conflict. I've seen article on Medium[2] (earlier with unblurred screenshots) and Rosenberg seemed to me not quite adequate person.

Telegram was developed in the VK offices for a long time after VK was supposedly "stolen" from Durov.
