Registered Apple developer here. I visit the following sites to keep myself up-to-date on Apple ecosystem: http://www.macrumors.com (Covers news relevant to developers, entrepreneurs and consumers alike. The only blog one needs to follow to get updates on happenings in the Apple ecosystem) http://daringfireball.net (John Gruber personal blog. For the quality of its editorial and views on happenings in Apple and Tech world. He is also the created of Markdown) http://www.loopinsight.com (Jim Dalrymple's views on happenings in Apple ecosystem, the widely renowned Apple insider) P.S.: Not for a regular visit, but Macrumors also maintains a very insightful buyer's guide at http://buyersguide.macrumors.com

I run a series of e-mail newsletters on topics I'm interested in and have about 190k subscribers. But that's only one tiny way, there are lots of people who do things like blog about news full-time, run tumblelogs, industry analysts, etc. http://daringfireball.net/ would be a top example of one of these. http://www.loopinsight.com/ are another. Lots of podcasts, YouTubers, etc. Generally "indie media" I guess. It's worth noting, however, that it's quite hard to make a good living in that way and only a small percentage make it to an enviable position. It's certainly a lot easier to make $100k+ per year as a full-time programmer than as someone consuming/producing media.

I remember that earning call very clearly and I believe Tim is being misquoted: He said "if you only want me to make...". The word "only" can be critical here from an investor's perspective. Update: The following article seems to have a more accurate and contextual transcript of what Tim actually said: http://www.loopinsight.com/2014/03/03/tim-cook-doing-whats-right/

I find that page hard to read due to its huge font-size. Also when I am somewhere in the text and there is a headline, I have a hard time guessing its level. Some additional decoration or indicators on the side might be nice. The screen highly limits the overview as you cannot scroll away and quickly refind your position, you lost the position. So additional marking of the place in the text would help a lot with those "very few of many lines visible on the screen" pieces. edit: There is a similar problem on several of the namedropped sites too, http://www.marco.org/ http://shawnblanc.net/ and http://www.loopinsight.com/ all have a weird mixture of title formatting of the posts. Sometimes it is big, sometimes small, I have trouble seeing where are post starts or ends and what are just smaller headings within one.

Apple iTunes Match (and Apple Music) subscriber, with 23,000 hand ripped songs, only about 18,000 able to exact match by Apple, 5,000 are less common versions. Also have enabled iCloud Music Library. Note these are three different services, and iCloud Music Library has been the most likely culprit for monkeying with your music, not Apple Music. The combo of all three has deleted or auto-replaced exactly zero of my custom rips. I can use a series of steps (smart playlist to find matched songs, then manually delete that set) to shift to using Apple's high quality unprotected version, or not. I wonder if the key to everything working as you imagine is the Match subscriptions: http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/ If using Match, then after matching, manually deleting local, then re-downloading, you end up with a very high quality file without DRM that will continue to work fine and be portable, even after you cancel. I'm not sure what happens if using only Apple Music without Match. The linked article sounds a lot like the iCloud Music Library beta problems in July 2015: http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/07/01/apple-music-users-complain-i… And similar support experiences: http://www.loopinsight.com/2015/07/24/i-got-my-music-back-at-least-mos…

Read a physical book (not a computer, phone, or tablet screen) — I've been reading this monstrous tome lately, and it's been a great change from Facebook and Twitter: http://www.amazon.com/Aperture-Magazine-Anthology-Minor-1952-1976/dp/1… A Kindle is an ok fallback (for me at least) Get some exercise — I feel way better after running even just 1 mile. I did 3 earlier tonight, and can barely keep my eyes open right now. Don't drink — Your sleep isn't as restful: http://time.com/3671777/drinking-sleep Don't drink coffee after x PM — I always cut myself off from caffeine by 4pm, and try to do it by 2pm. Find out what's right for you. Take some melatonin — It did me a lot of good when I used to have trouble sleeping. Address the sources of anxiety in your life — A comparison of how well I sleep now vs. when I had a lot of anxiety in my life (stress from working at Microsoft, stress from trying to drag along my faltering startup, etc.) is stark. I don't fall asleep with much or any worry most nights. Worst case scenario: ask a doctor to prescribe you Ambien or the like. Re-establish a decent sleeping pattern, and then figure out how to address everything else. Edit: There's one thing I want to mention about exercising. I started running only two months ago after what essentially amounts to a lifetime of non-exercise. I wasn't overweight by any means—I was just plain skinny. Like, sort of the way you expect your average nerd to be skinny. After my first run of…

I have never used any version of Logic, but the reviews I have read are all saying that none of the power features have been removed. The Macworld review is titled "Logic Pro X loses none of its power, gains great new features" [0]. The Loop even explicitly says "Rumors have circulated for a long time that Logic Pro was going to be discontinued or that it was going to be reincarnated as some sort of 'GarageBand Pro.' ... this is far from a GarageBand knockoff. This is the same professional digital audio workstation software that we’ve used for years, only better" [1]. And again, macProVideo says "many people feared Logic would be 'Dumbed-down' into a 'LogicBand / GarageBand Pro,' ... I'm pleased to report, it's the same Logic you know and love, but with a fantastic facelift and some brilliant new features." I had noticed in the past weeks that Gruber wasn't writing or posting interesting stuff as much as before, Daring Fireball started to looked more like "curated" advertising for apps (paid or not paid, not sure about it); and it really is getting boring... and now you come up with this?. The sudden, and unexpected, move of one of the most beloved podcasts in the world (a big part thanks to Dan) without a word? Gruber, you OWE an explanation to your readers, period!. As Jim Dalrymple commented in his post (http://www.loopinsight.com/2012/05/17/blogging-is-not-a-thing-its-an-a… : "Blogging is also about trust. If you’re readers know that you are writing from your heart, they will listen. They will engage you, and in the process you will learn something new. That, in turn, will help shape your opinions. Blogging doesn’t have an agenda, other than expressing your true thoughts on a subject." That trust just started to crumble..

>Edit: For those downvoting this I should have probably provided supporting evidence, though oddly no one treated the parent post in the same way. Maybe because they were ALREADY familiar with numerous articles examining the matter. >Feel free to follow the references at the base of this article: http://clarkvision.com/imagedetail/eye-resolution.html* It's funny how you send as "supporting evidence" non-specific to the subject matter studies, that just talk about the eye and it's capabilities, while never testing the actual "retina display" math and numbers. It's like you point us to some huge volume of "Ophthalmology" and say "I'm right and here's the proof". Here's some more topic-specific exhibits: http://www.loopinsight.com/2010/06/11/apples-retina-display-claims-are… http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/06/10/resolving-th…

It really isn't. You likely have a phone, there's a whole App Store full of calculators, and in a pinch there's always Spotlight. PCalc has been on iPad since just after iPad launched. https://www.loopinsight.com/2010/04/07/pcalc-now-available-for-the-ipa…

Sound recognition is also another very cool accessibility feature: https://www.loopinsight.com/2021/05/11/apple-support-how-to-use-sound-… Though I'm not sure if it comes at the cost of increased battery usage.

Via Dave Mark http://www.loopinsight.com/2017/10/25/bloomberg-apple-told-suppliers-t… : > If reducing accuracy allows Apple to ship, this (if true) is a logical decision. It’s what businesses do. The key is to compromise without reducing quality to the point where it breaks. I think Apple would eat the delay before they shipped an iPhone X that didn’t meet their security standards. So I don't think this is as big a deal as it sounds. The article makes it sound like they're allowing a half-assed product to make it to market, but it could just be reducing accuracy by a fraction that would be unnoticeable by the majority of uses.

I assumed this was a link to Conan's sketch. Gruber pointed out how surprising it is "that Federighi is famous enough to spoof." http://www.loopinsight.com/2017/09/14/craig-federighi-on-conan/

To be fair what that guy originally said and what happened were two different things. Apple contacted him before they shut down his account. At least that's what Apple said... http://www.loopinsight.com/2016/10/10/apple-responds-to-dash-controver…

I remember reading a while ago some articles about Lucas Films real-time rendering feature, planed for their future flicks. Actually, here's one (of the articles): http://www.loopinsight.com/2013/09/24/lucasfilm-pushes-the-boundaries-… For open-source, I know that Blender uses Cycles, which fires ray-tracing renderings in the normal views on each change, and this so is for quite a while already.

It's definitely a confusing situation: http://www.loopinsight.com/2015/07/24/i-got-my-music-back-at-least-mos… I wish we could get an accurate official explanation of when (if ever) local files will be moved/deleted/replaced with cloud versions. Maybe the answer is never, but I sure am not confident about that.

Good point. The only official statement from Apple that I can find is this one, which doesn't ask the FBI to reveal or do anything: http://www.loopinsight.com/2016/03/28/apples-statement-on-government-d… (I couldn't find this statement on apple.com, but it has been relayed by many news sources so I believe it is indeed official.)

Well, considering that VMWare fired their entire dev team in January [1], it's not surprising that this isn't fixed... I'd expect more of these kinds of issues to crop up without traction in the future. 1. http://www.loopinsight.com/2016/01/28/vmware-abruptly-fires-fusion-dev…

It's not at all speculation, I just didn't feel the need to prove it. We're not obsessive about that here, not like Wikipedia or Stackoverflow. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17580251/what-exactly-is-a-private-… http://www.macrumors.com/2013/10/15/launch-center-pro-developer-must-r… http://www.loopinsight.com/2010/04/06/apples-use-of-private-apis-for-i…
