Not to be that guy, but since no one else has mentioned it: a file in Dropbox is a file shared with the NSA. I was a happy paying Dropbox customer since 2008 but downgraded my account to the free tier a few months ago. I no longer consider Dropbox trustworthy for anything except (1) trivial files and (2) files encrypted client-side before they're put into Dropbox. Even with the above, I had two specific use-cases that only recently did I resolve: - 1Password Sync. Dropbox is no longer necessary here since 1Password natively supports iCloud sync across Mac and iOS. - Arbitrary file-sharing between Mac and iOS. Dropbox is no longer necessary here ever since I've been running BTSync[0], which has worked flawlessly in my experience. It might be time to cancel Dropbox entirely. Are people looking at bitTorrent Sync? (http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html) I'm uing it on a laptop, a server and my android devices. It works great. Seemless.
SEJeff · 2013-07-18
I'd really love to see this integrate with the newish BitTorrent sync: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html

This might be cool in theory, but no way in HELL it's the 'easiest way in the world.' As of right now, only chrome can transfer files to chrome, and firefox to firefox. As of now, the easiest, best, fastest, and most secure way to transfer files is by using BTSync. (http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html) Create a shared folder, give out the secret or read only key, done.

i 'm considering btsync on a server somewhere outside the US (or even europe, as it seems) http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync-hero99371.html It would be great if btsync supported multiple user accounts on the same daemon.

TLDR: >BitTorrent Sync’s functionality is comparable to services such as Dropbox and Skydrive, except for the fact that there’s no cloud involved. Users sync the files between their own computers and no third-party has access to it. > It is an ideal tool for people who want to share large amounts of data between computers without going through third-party services. >The Sync application is available for Windows, OSX, Linux and has the ability run on NAS devices through a web-interface. Readers who are interested in giving it a spin can head over to BitTorrent labs [1], where the Sync app can be downloaded. [1]: http://labs.bittorrent.com/

BitTorrent already built something like this (but even better and more secure) called Bleep: http://labs.bittorrent.com/bleep/

Pretty hard, but it's coming. See http://labs.bittorrent.com/bleep

> If DropBox's sync system wasn't so simple/unobtrusive I'd use something else. Perhaps consider using Bittorrent Sync[1] for synchronisation. For practical purposes, it's similar to using DropBox, the key difference being that instead of syncing with DropBox in the cloud, you are syncing folders across hardware you control. The hardware could be different computers, phones, tablets etc. [1] http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html

BitTorrent Sync. No central server, no accounts. http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
iterationx · 2013-08-28
What about BitSync, it strikes me as good option, but i'm no crypto guy. http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
lstepniewski · 2013-08-13
That's exactly how BT Sync (http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html) works, but for data.
buro9 · 2013-07-21
I just use Tarsnap for this scenario: http://www.tarsnap.com/ What I am looking for is a folder that syncs, but is secure and open source. BitTorrent Sync is the closest to how it should work, but is not open source: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
urza · 2013-07-21
I started using BitSync[1] few days ago to sync and backup some folders in my Android to my PC and Mac. Unfortunately it is not opensource, but is is still better than dropbox, because it does not store my files in cloud and it has better setting - i can choose which folders on my device i want to backup or synchronize. Another centralized service, sadly. I've decided that whenever possible, I will seek out decentralized solutions instead. Looking for a decentralized, peer-to-peer file sharing and synchronization solution? I've been using BitTorrent Sync as a replacement for Dropbox, and so far I've been very pleased with it. Unlimited storage, no 3rd-party servers involved, and less CPU usage and UI lag than Dropbox. Did I mention that it's free? Check it out: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html

Seems like BitTorrent Sync would be a likely alternative. http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
unsignedint · 2013-07-11
Not sure how this is better than BitTorrent Sync http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html. BTSync runs on many NASes, and $40 Raspberry Pi.
semenko · 2013-07-11
Take a look at OwnCloud http://owncloud.org/ and BitTorrent Sync: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
hrayr · 2013-07-03
While this is not necessarily a box service, it will sync across many devices in a very secure way: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync-hero99371.html

BitTorrent Sync [1] can help with the explicit file sharing problem from the xkcd. Too bad it's not open source. [1]: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
znowi · 2013-06-10
Or use BitTorrent Sync instead. I'm quite pleased with it and moved all my data off Dropbox. http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html
sahirh · 2013-06-10
Have a look at BitTorrent Sync: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html One advantage is that there's no third-party storage of data involved.

yes, apple should embrace distributed live streaming and make it really easy and google glasses or apple glasses should support it. These guys are doing it right now: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/bittorrent-live.html It has been on the drawing board for years, we are still hosting websites on single servers... slowly moving to 'clouds' (owned by single companies).. but we should really be moving to media swarms.
mcx · 2013-05-27
Yes it can sync across LAN: "If your devices are on the same local network, BitTorrent Sync will use your LAN for faster synchronization." http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync/technology.html
lbatista · 2013-05-25
I've been using http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html for a while and it is as reliable as you need.
babas · 2013-05-16
You can set the port in the configuration: http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync/get-started.html#app-prefe… The closed source nature of Bitorrent Sync is biggest drawback IMHO. But I guess FOSS clones are on their way. The bit torrent protocol in itself is very well known after all.
menny · 2013-05-08
It says "© 2013 BitTorrent, Inc." Is it "Sync" (http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html) based?
