I'll throw out there that I work for JumpCloud. We just launched our MDM service for Macs on top of the remote management of Macs we've supported for almost eight years now, and continue to support Windows, and Linux systems as well. If you manage a heterogeneous fleet you should check us out. (Or honestly, I think we're pretty great in homogeneous envs too).
Accounts with less than 10 users are free.

EDIT: Clarified that we've been remotely managing macs or the better part of a decade. The MDM piece is the new one.

Auth. If you can stomach it, back it up with a real directory service. JumpCloud is a great way to do it. It's free up to 10 users. You can use it with Google Hosted Apps as your user backend. You can set it up in 10 minutes. It has TONS of features, you probably won't look at them all once you can use it as an SSO/LDAP provider, you can forget about all that until you need more. Also you can easily replace it with something self hosted if you grow to the point of needing to do something else.
Determine if you need organization level RBAC (Role Based Access Control). Does your app need to have account managers at the customer level? You probably know from the outset if you'll face this problem. It's a big pain if you get someone to implement your product somewhere, then they lose that person and they have trouble accessing their account. Not that you can't provide support to solve it, but the legal side can get tricky and no matter what you lose face with the customer over the frustration. DockerHub messed this up IMO and that's why they haven't added it, because it's too complicated to add now.
You can easily have a simple SSO layer on top of it so your super admins come from the LDAP(or other) and user/customers are a separate DB in your existing app. It can be really expensive to add complex auth or change how it works later, but a stitch in time makes it easy to grow and adapt. This helps tremendously for DevOps, deployment security, managing things like white label…

Like solving BIG problems? Want to have BIG fun? Then JumpCloud wants you. We’re looking for the next member(s) of our agile, awesome engineering team. You would be an integral member of the development team, designing and building the next generation of server-management and directory software from the cloud.
At JumpCloud we’re solving complex problems in the cloud using the latest and greatest technologies like MongoDB, Node.js, GoLang, Vagrant, Puppet, Redis, etc. If you enjoy solving challenging technical problems using the latest technologies, then this is the job for you. But wait, you haven’t used those technologies? No worries: we’re open-minded and we believe that good engineering is not technology-specific.
JumpCloud is an early-stage, funded, venture-backed cloud-security business based in beautiful downtown Boulder, Colorado. We offer cutting-edge hardware and tools, full benefits (medical, dental, 401(k), etc.) and a fast-paced but casual start-up working environment. Local or relocatable applicant preferred. Flexible working hours. Office is right on the Pearl St. Mall in Boulder, stumbling distance to dozens of bars and restaurants, not to mention the epic hiking, biking and climbing opportunities in the Flatirons.
We're growing rapidly and are hiring for Senior Developer, QA Engineer, and Infrastructure Engineer roles.
Keywords: MongoDB, Node.js, GoLang, Vagrant, Salt, Redis, JQuery, ExtJS,…

I use jumpcloud (https://jumpcloud.com). Works well, free for small teams. Not open.

That sounds great, however, 'just launched' doesn't sound too promising.
In addition, I'm not sure whether you are GDPR-compliant as claimed at https://jumpcloud.com/gdpr. Where's your Privacy Shield certification and who's your EU representative according to art. 27 GDPR?

If you are interested in setting up 2FA for SSH, we have a great step-by-step guide for multi-machine deployments. Alternatively, you can sign up for JumpCloud to automatically implement this, and manage other key aspects of your infrastructure.

Although endof10.org isn't really targeting businesses, the switch to Linux can be doable, depending on the size and age of the organisation.
Usually, smaller and younger organisations these days tend to lean heavily into SaaS / cloud solutions (for IAM, configuration/endpoint management, business processes etc) and have very little traditional on-premise server infrastructure. This makes it easier for them to switch to Linux, since a lot of these services are OS-agnostic, or have other cloud-based alternatives.
For eg, Azure AD and Intune supports Linux, but you're probably better off using something else like JumpCloud[1], which offers more and better Linux management features. If you're already used to the cloud model then making the switch to an alternative provider is pretty straightforward, especially if you don't have to deal with decades worth of legacy infrastructure.
For legacy end-user Windows apps, they could be delivered via Citrix Cloud, or even just any normal Windows VM running anywhere, with the apps being accessible on the end-user device via FreeRDP's RemoteApps feature (which makes it appear as if the app is running locally on the system). This should do as a temporary measure until these legacy apps are replaced by native or cloud-based alternatives.
Finally, this sort of model could even be applied for larger businesses, in a piecemeal fashion, say starting with a small user group/business unit that has little dependency on Windows-specific business…

JumpCloud | Sr. Software Engineer, Sr. DevOps Engineer, Security Engineer | Boulder, Colorado (Greater Denver Area)
ONSITE, RELOCATION available
At JumpCloud, we have a plan. See, there’s this company that is ripe for displacement. They put out software that everyone uses but nobody loves. We think we can do it better. Much better. We can make it easy-to-use, more powerful, and massively scalable / highly available by putting it in the cloud. Just like Gmail supplanted Exchange, we want to disrupt (yes, we said it) the Directory server market.
Who are we? We’re the scrappy underdog with the backing of serious VCs and the experience of a crack team of founders and engineers with decades of identity and Security experience.
Who are we looking for? Comrades in arms to fight the entrenched opposition. People who want to seriously change Identity and Directory Management. We’re funded, we’re in downtown Boulder, and we’re making a big difference. Get in here and be a part of it!
Stack: Postgres/Mongo/Redis, NodeJS/Golang, Docker/Saltstack

AAD without all the security features (p1/p2) is free, with some limitations you'll quickly hit if using as your main directory. https://jumpcloud.com/blog/understanding-aad-pricing-free is a decent overview

Well, that article was written by the head of this company https://www.jumpcloud.com/about/ that sells an SaaS solution that builds on Chef and Puppet. More generally speaking, each DevOps framework has its own integrated solution for user account provisioning / security.
