Joe Morrison writes a newsletter about the satellite imagery and mapping industry, drawing on his work at companies in the field.

What HN saysHN links it for its analysis of the satellite imagery business, including the view that few customers outside governments pay for imagery and that old archives should be opened.

A newsletter is the same thing as a blog post, right? In that case I think this one about the satellite imagery industry is interesting: https://joemorrison.substack.com/ The main thing you learn is that outside of governments there isn’t much of a satellite image industry. Which is why there aren’t that many posts.

Mapwith.ai is a great tool that lets the server draw the shapes of the buildings and roads, though you still have to fill out the data by hand. The tool is maintained by Facebook, but the front-end[1] is a FOSS fork of OSM's RapiD web editor, and OSM is the type of project that strongly benefits from corporate contributions.[2] [1] https://github.com/facebookincubator/RapiD [2] https://joemorrison.substack.com/p/openstreetmap-is-having-a-moment-dc…

I hope so. I wrote a whole article about it: https://joemorrison.substack.com/p/open-all-of-the-satellite-imagery Even Maxar is starting to deeply discount old imagery via their ARD program: https://twitter.com/marcpfister/status/1541858657473744898?s=46&t=… RIP Open California, but at least Planet gives away their monthly mosaic of the mid-latitudes now via their partnership with NICFI (non-commercial use): https://twitter.com/planet/status/1435229673882017794?s=46&t=q4cDh…
