For a good font—not some crap on DaFont—you're talking many, many thousands of hours. Often just one person's labour, often by eye. Software makes it a little bit easier, but you're still kerning every single possible character combination by eye, and you're still redrawing glyphs at every possible size to make sure they don't render like shit. There are lots of dinosaurs in typography—Linotype etc—but the best studios are tiny. Some great links to great studios here: http://jessicahische.is/thinkingthoughts

"http://jessicahische.is/monkeyingaround" has got to be the best URL I've seen in a long time.

Sure thing (note: some of these are consulting firms vs. agencies - which are really just scaled versions of consultants vs. freelancers): - consulting: http://www.nngroup.com/ - agency: http://www.akqa.com/ - consulting: http://www.cooper.com/ - agency: http://www.elpassion.com/ - consultant: http://andrewhinton.com/ - consultant: http://jessicahische.is/ - freelancer: http://www.danielaa.me/ - freelancer: http://owltastic.com/ You'll see with the examples above that both the agencies (freelancers) and consulting firms (consultants) offer similar services. However the consultants are mostly focused on a small set of skills (research, UX, etc.) whereas the agencies keep it broader.

Most of their submissions looked like they were done in the same afternoon using a shitty torrent of 'hot fonts' from the pirate bay. When we talk about updating a brand, one of the most recent examples of solid execution was mail chimp. http://jessicahische.is/monkeyingaround

Why not link directly to her site? http://jessicahische.is/monkeyingaround The blog you linked to (and you seem to link to it a lot) simply excerpted some of the text from her site, and then included some of the images (but not all) from her blog. At least that post's author had the decency to re-host the images and put a source link at the bottom.
