I had an almost identical experience to the parent, though I went KDE a little earlier than the publication of that incredible article, "GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker (and my toilets are blocked)" [0]. It's absolutely worth a read, regardless of your chosen DE. ...but after you're done reading it, perhaps you too will change your mind. You sure about that? I see the bug is still open: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/233 This is not about thumbnails in the file manager but about the file chooser (open/save dialog). I believe the following post is still relevant: https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… At least KDE does this properly: https://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2021/04/comparison-of-file-chooser-dialogs.…

I don't need new reasons to hate Linux. Like I said, I have moved to macbooks as my personal computing device because of the better hardware. > solved a while ago Can not be the case because I was facing these issues less than a couple of years ago. I was responding to the "Stockholm syndrome" comment specifically because there are a number of hardware and software problems (e.g. https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… with using linux as a desktop operating system that linux users have to find their way around, so I found the comment rather full of irony. PS: I already know that the file-picker issue has been fixed. That does not take away from the fact that it was in fact broken for decades. It is only meant as an example.

> any designer who attempts to help and improve things finds themselves ignored, with no means to actually carry out any decision, and walk away soon after. Ah yes, remember how long it took before image thumbnails appeared in the GTK file picker? Finally in 2022, but that was after countless forks and patches submitted that implemented them. https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the…

Try uploading a file in GNOME. The interface has no thumbnails. This has been an open issue for something like 18 years. Its not a problem in KDE. More info: https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the…

They’re referring to the file picker. https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… Gnome still doesn’t have an effective way to preview images when picking files, a feature from Windows 98.

What they meant is having thumbnail instead of the icon, so that you can quickly see a preview of all the files instead of having to select them one by one. This article was somewhat recently shared and it explains the whole ordeal https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… (contains snarky language). It’s a small(-ish) issue but people often share it as a good example of their frustration with the way Gnome is managed - the bug report has been open for years, there has been several patches proposed, but they’ve always been either rejected or ignored with no discussion. My personal (and similar) pet peeve is that typing in the window will trigger a search instead of selecting the file matching the key like in every other OS.

Yo... You know what's more retarded on this GNOME screenshot https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/Filepickermeme.png than the absence of thumbnails? The button order. Don't use GTK. Ever! Do you get me? [No][Yes]

This is one of the problems, and it might be the biggest problem with the modern web, but it's not the only problem. Non-experts are bad at producing remixable content. * A significant number of people do not really use file names. https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… * Twitter offers no official way to make bold or italic text, but some people make it work using math symbols. They either don't know, or don't care, about all the accessibility and search tooling this breaks. * Try downloading a C program off the internet and compiling it on anything other than the original developer's computer. In none of these cases does anybody benefit from the lack of usable metadata, yet nonetheless the metadata doesn't exist.

Well why doesn't the GNOME project offer a way for people to pay for specific features and bugfixes? I would contribute money if I knew it would go towards paying someone to fix the file-chooser dialog. So would a lot of other people, if there was an announcement. I know for a fact I am not the only person who would do this: https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… > One may say, "quit complaining, the GNOME developers are doing for free!" Okay. Well, how much money should I pay for someone to fix this then? I’m legit offering a bounty here. Conditions are that this fix makes it into the master branch.

Are we getting thumbnails in the filepicker? https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… Outside of that little joke (although it's a real problem), it's nice to have something like this. It will help developers to make coherent interfaces and the GNOME ecosystem will get better with this. I personally like GNOME, I use it mainly through Pop!_OS as I really don't like snaps.

If you read the article more closely than I did originally there is an example of what I see in their original article [0]. The thumbnail is part of the list view and they want to see a thumbnail without the other file details. [0] https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome2.png

It would obviously be easier for GNOME to ship an apparently more refined experience when customization possibilities are negligible and basic features are missing. One can't even change the fonts of GNOME out of the box without first installing Tweak Tool and even then, you can't change the font of GNOME Shell itself. If you dare customize the CSS to change it, you're implementing "hacks". I wouldn't be surprised if the ability to change fonts was removed from GNOME and GTK. Not to mention that GNOME devs seem to think that volume control slider isn't required in their music app and GNOME file picker still doesn't have thumbnails. So yeah, basic features are missing. https://jayfax.neocities.org/mediocrity/gnome-has-no-thumbnails-in-the… Then again, it's probably a useless debate at this point since everything is subjective. I'm confident that one could come up with a desktop environment with windows turned upside down and inside out with colors changing randomly every second and many people would still like it and call it "polished" and "refined".
