Thank you! Recurse is amazing. Truly an amazing gathering of accomplished, interesting and curious folks. It’s an amazing community and setting - if you can swing the 6 or 12 weeks, and especially if you can come to the physical space in downtown Brooklyn, I would very much recommend it. Lots of Recursers end up on the HN homepage these days - from https://jvns.ca to https://jakelazaroff.com ‘s series on CRDTs. I think there’s a connection between the Recurse and HN communities, and an appreciation of what Recursers tend to gravite towards (personal projects that are meaningful to its creators, and are typically about explaining, exploring or building something new). Feel free to email me to talk more about it. As for Trouble, thanks for the suggestion! I’ll be adding it, on top of all of the other places that people have been mentioning.

I stole the footnotes from my very talented friend Jake (https://jakelazaroff.com/), whose work you might have seen on here in the past. Note that they’re sidenotes on large screens but on small ones they swap to inline footnotes that expand when you click on them. Anyway steal away!!

> I don't think there's any inherent upside to using Web Components over React. The upside is that web components will last longer than react components. There was a great blog post about this very thing and why someone chose them over react components in their use case (making their code migration-proof across updates and stack changes): https://jakelazaroff.com/words/web-components-will-outlive-your-javasc…

This is a pretty decent run down (and DHH has taken it much further since this post was published): https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

Nothing on this list screams explicitly nazi to me, but this is a long list for things that are believed mostly by neo-nazis. Like heavily complaining that London isn't racillly pure enough. And supporting a prominent political figure who believes every Muslim is a terrorist. And complaining about "woke" all the time. so it depends if you believe that everyone who supported the nazi party was a nazi, or only the people who actually did the holocaust. https://blogs.gnome.org/alatiera/2025/11/06/dhh-and-omarchy-midlife-cr… https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

He came out as a white nationalist [1]. And he's always been contentious. [1] https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

Not sure he's "on the outs", he on Shopify's board. Sidekiq's solo dev (Mike Perham) has for many years made a generous donation to Ruby Central. He informed them that he didn't want his money to be spent platforming dhh at their conference, they ignored his request, he stopped his annual donations. If you want to read about dhh's colorful blog posts and tweets: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

Read "As I Remember London", and put on your reading comprehension hat. If you need help, try this article: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ DHH is clearly talking about people of color in London, and he's clearly expressing approval for Tommy Robinson. If you won't acknowledge that, you're either oblivious or racist. I hope it's the former.

It looked good at the beginning, but then I found out about its creator - DHH. Not someone I want to support. There are better distros out there (Omarchy isn't a distro btw). Just a few issues highlighted here: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ https://davidcel.is/articles/rails-needs-new-governance https://paulbjensen.co.uk/2025/09/17/on-dhhs-as-i-remember-london.html

He's not just right wing. He's an outspoken racist. I hope that's not half of us, but just more vocal. What you call intolerance of opinion is also known as the paradox of tolerance. https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ Can you read through that and still tell me that you want to see DHH be a part of the community?
schainks · 2025-10-23
You mean something like this? https://jakelazaroff.com/words/homomorphically-encrypted-crdts/ It is slow and inefficient, but can be done.
tastyface · 2025-10-11
DHH did not say "something stupid once," but posted an article dripping with white nationalist sentiment a mere month ago: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ As a somewhat conservative Christian -- not some frothing-at-the-mouth liberal -- reading this left me feeling vaguely nauseous and made me want to ensure that no amount of my money went into this guy's pockets again. This is not some witch hunt over subtle ideological differences. It's literally the kind of thing that David Duke would have been saying a decade ago. "Whether or not it is, the repetition of that word by you and your friends is a magic spell that brought that administration into reality." Based on my observations over the last decade, I vehemently disagree on the direction of causality here.

> I have yet to see evidence DHH is a far-right racist. Clearly linked in the above thread: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

Drama and forking aren't going to kill Ruby. This is a move like the one from Freenode to LiberaChat: hostile entities take over $thing, sensible people move on to $newthing, the new normal settles around $newthing. As for DHH, he's a far-right racist. https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ Silencing and excluding such people from open source is the right thing to do because failure to do so means forcing others to interact with people who are hostile to their very existence.

Fascism may be the wrong label. Racism could be a much better fit. The blog post in question: https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64 The interpretation that raises some pretty interesting points about the inherent racism in the expressed worldview: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ There is, however, an interpretation that explains how this specific kind of racism can be seen as at least fascism-adjacent: https://davidcel.is/articles/rails-needs-new-governance The question of whether he wants politics in the workplace is moot when he's making public blog posts like this. For the open-source community, the open Internet is the workplace. People aren't just going to pretend DHH didn't say what he said (in public, of his own free will, using his own megaphone) because he didn't post it to [email protected].

Yes I absolutely hate DHH as well and in fact I was using omarchy but then migrated over to cachyos hyprland https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/ DHH is not a good guy but the hype around him made me feel so. He's weird and racist and fascist. Stop the hype around dhh and everyone please read the article everybody here's DHH reality Let’s ditch the superlatives and review David’s post objectively: He thinks that even if you were born in the UK, you only count as British if you’re white. He wouldn’t consider living in London specifically because it has too many people of color. He uses racist tropes to accuse Asian men of being dangerous predators who attack white women. He pushes debunked conspiracy theories about immigrants replacing white people. He finds a march where speakers called for banning all non-Christian religions and ethnically cleansing immigrants “heartwarming”. Finally — and maybe most alarmingly — he argues that all of the above is normal and not extreme. You can use whatever word you want to describe all that. But if you, like me, didn’t realize that this is who DHH is, we can probably agree that he’s way worse than we thought. The above lines were from the article This guy shouldn't remotely be talked about in a good light imo, yes I appreciate open source but I can't seperate the art from the artist. I genuinely don't know why they defend this guy. HN literally flaged this post in literal…

What were the arguments in favour of SPAs in the first place? I'm finding it interesting that most of the top HN submissions (by popularity) matching "single page app" are critical, not positive. First 15 follow, all but 5 are negative: - You probably don't need a single-page app (https://journal.plausible.io/you-probably-dont-need-a-single-page-app) 816 points | 6 years ago | 499 comments - A single-page app is almost always worse than a multi-page app (https://www.gregnavis.com/articles/the-architecture-no-one-needs.html) 289 points | 6 years ago | 145 comments - The myth that you can’t build interactive web apps except as single page app (https://htmx.org/essays/you-cant/) 262 points | 4 months ago | 143 comments - Building a single-page app with Htmx (https://jakelazaroff.com/words/building-a-single-page-app-with-htmx/) 252 points | 5 months ago | 143 comments - AWS Lambda as a back end for a single-page app (http://lg.io/2015/05/16/the-future-is-now-and-its-using-aws-lambda.htm… 229 points | 10 years ago | 73 comments - Create your own dysfunctional single-page app (https://tinnedfruit.com/articles/create-your-own-dysfunctional-single-… 208 points | 6 years ago | 138 comments - The Single-Page-App Morality Play (https://www.baldurbjarnason.com/2021/single-page-app-morality-play/) 207 points | 3 years ago | 131 comments - Todos: a Backbone.js example Single-Page-App (with…
