> I really don't understand what Ad Nauseam is trying to achieve. It honestly seems like it benefits Google more than it hurts them. Google is part of the problem, but they're neither the only ones nor best to target through bottom-up approaches. > It directly hurts advertisers, but not enough that it would stop anyone from advertising. You know the saying about XML - if it doesn't solve the problem, you are not using enough of it. > there's nothing I can do as an advertiser. We can't stop advertising... We know. The whole thing is a cancer[0], a runaway negative feedback loop. No single enlightened advertiser can do anything about it unilaterally. Which is why the pressure needs to go up until ~everyone wants change. -- [0] - https://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html

For any that haven't seen it- a great essay on advertising and how it relates to cancer: http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html

Who do we have to lobby to get nyan-mode into emacs mainline? Happy to send a recommendation email. Was surprised how high quality the repo is, too! https://github.com/TeMPOraL/nyan-mode It even has an accompanying blog post, which I found informative. http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2011-08-25-introducing-nyan-mode-el-turn-… And even a Show HN. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2906632

As an example of non-exceptional condition signaling: http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-24-algebraic-effects-you-can-touc… Progress can be signaled, and then dealt with if needed. In headless mode it won't be handled. In a console it could be a progress bar or statement. In a GUI, update a variable that changes the status display. And it ends up as little more than a no-op if there are no handlers for it. Nothing exceptional about it, but creates a great deal of flexibility in managing a system.

http://jacek.zlydach.pl, yes? I eagerly await this piece. I can think of a lot of people (and groups) who would find it enlightening!

Immediately reminded me of something I read a couple of years ago https://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html, which has some strong opinions on why advertising should be banned

can you show the 2048 clone? EDIT : My bad, I see you posted the link elsewhere (link for posterity http://jacek.zlydach.pl/v/2048/ ) TBH 6 hours seems a lot longer than I would have expected.

TeMPOraL has extensive experience with trying to limit HN distractions, see in part: <http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2020-05-25-blocking-distractions-with-mik… But see: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36125138> I also recall him specifically asking dang to disable his account, which ended up being accomplished through either the "noprocrast" or "limit" features, though I can't find the comment (it was likely either on HN or the Fediverse). Somewhat amusingly, I happened to catch his re-appearance on HN within 45 minutes of his resuming commenting, for whatever that has to say about the both of us.

> No need to force your ad to them. Oh, there is a need, alright. If they claim they're not interested, it's time to shift strategies[1]. After all, nobody's immune to advertising[2]. I'm sure there are more relevant studies that prove even ad-averse individuals are still susceptible to them. It's just a matter of finding the right _kind_ of advertising to reach them. Doing this effectively is what gets you promoted in adtech. Advertising is a cancer on society.[3] [1]: https://wistia.com/learn/marketing/the-psychology-behind-why-people-di… [2]: https://knowledge.insead.edu/marketing/think-youre-immune-to-advertisi… [3]: https://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html

I think that advertising is the main problem. Most issues caused by social media ultimately originate from this way to generate money out of wasting people's time. Cut that source of revenue and suddenly there is no longer any incentive to get people addicted, encourage outrage, promote misinformation/clickbait, etc. Related: http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html (I totally agree with all of it)

I note the author is very much involved in companies projects and social media platforms that all depend on advertising. http://jacek.zlydach.pl/index.html I'd respect his position more if he was not on LinkedIn or Facebook and did not work on commercial projects.

> How has the web been tainted with ads? * https://www.superhighway98.com/seo * http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnPmg0R1M04 * https://voxeu.org/article/advertising-major-source-human-dissatisfacti… * https://www.forbrukerradet.no/side/new-study-the-advertising-industry-… * https://danielmiessler.com/blog/google-amp-not-good-thing/ * https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/19/open_source_insider_google_am… The worlds largest advertising company is well known for abusing its position to push technological features and standards that benefit it-even if nobody else does-suppress and hinder competitors and aggressively and continuously trying to erode the open web. Next up, Facebook is notorious for similarly attempting to subvert and erode the open web, whilst simultaneously invading your privacy and using you as psychological lab-rats.
