Island, a company that sells an enterprise browser built on Chromium, writes about browser security, malware and Chromium internals.

What HN saysHN commenters mostly discuss the company itself, doubting its billion-dollar valuation and noting it is Chromium-based, with a suggestion to sell to enterprises and offer free consumer versions.

I feel like startups is just a way to do money laundering nowadays. You can say what you want but there is NO way this startup is worth a billion dollars and that this money is actually clean. Seriously, look at their website: https://www.island.io/ There is not even a SINGLE image of the browser itself, it's just 3D renders, there is no way to test it. At least BREX, Slack and the others are product you can see, it's something that you can know it exists. Even in the use cases for the browser they don't show anything about the browser itself. This is REALLY disappointing for any entrepreneur working on a REAL product and receiving NO from every single investor they talk to. I mean: i, a nobody, has a solid product, has paying clients. But because i am not friend of a VC or somebody else i need to listen that my product is not good enough, that it will never scale, that i don't have the right revenue to justify an investment. You can see my product, you can test it if you want. But then a guy comes with something that doesn't even have a proper website and is valuated a billion dollars out of the gate. It's just sad to see what the startup ecosystem has become.

How about this: sell the browser to the entreprise [1] and use the profit to offer the browser to the public for free, which in turns helps you secure a user base. [1] https://www.island.io/

I don't use GitLab but I do use Firefox for almost all my home and work browsing[1] and haven't had this problem with other sites which use cloudflare. I do use both ublock origin and advanced tracking protection always so I'm going to say the problem is with some configuration gitlab is doing rather than with cloudflare. [1] Exceptions being mobile, if I am specifically testing something and certain work situations where I am currently testing a locked-down web browser called "island"[2] which seems to be a chrome fork which gives Enterprise IT control over a bunch of stuff. Could it be a MitM "enterprise browser" like Talon or Island, and/or related browser extensions? https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/company/press/2023/palo-alto-networks… > Dec. 28, 2023 Palo Alto Networks .. announced that it has completed the acquisition of Talon Cyber Security, a pioneer of enterprise browser technology ...
