I really like https://getstream.io/ docs. For me, SDK support is important, as are examples and templates that I can play with & build off of. I also like the API usage dashboard that Stream supplies when you login. Which veers into the terriory of dev portal, but worth mentioning. Also, in terms of tools for actually building documentation, I recommend looking at https://docusaurus.io/ for clean, customisable documentation.

since this is built on top of Getstream.io https://getstream.io/ I guess it follows their pricing structure - https://getstream.io/pricing/ free for 3 million updates... what defines a feed update: The number of feed updates depends on how many activities you publish via the API and the number of users who follow those feeds. If you add an activity to a feed that is followed by 50 other feeds, this will trigger 51 feed updates. which sounds to me like if you use them to do stuff you have to control not just your feeds through their api but also your users - otherwise how will they know really how many users following the feeds?

It depends. For AI to work for large projects (did a post on this forever ago in AI terms. https://getstream.io/blog/cursor-ai-large-projects/) But you need: a staff level engineer to guide it, great standardization and testing best practices. And yes in that situation you can go 10-50x faster. Many teams/products are not in that environment though.

N.B. this isn't fully open source because it relies on the Stream API: https://getstream.io/ They have a free quota of 3 million feed updates (not sure if total, I'm guessing per month?). Important to keep in mind because the app may be open source, but they can pull the plug on it by shutting down the web service. And so you can't self host it independently. It might be nice, not saying otherwise, but for example something like Newsblur.com is open source and hosted, so you can pay a yearly fee for the service, while having the peace of mind that you can fork it and self host it yourself should the product die, which is what many of us want after Google pulled the plug on Reader ;-)

You get me thinking about side projects... http://getstream.io provides Twitter-like feeds as a service. For personal use wonder if it's possible to build a better newsfeed that Facebooks on top of the same content?

Built a demo around integrating Gemini Live with Stream's Video API for agent use-cases. In this example, I'm having the LLM provide feedback to players as they try to improve their mini-golf swing. On the backend, it uses the Python AI SDK to capture the WebRTC frames from the player, convert them, and then feed them to the Gemini Live API. Once we have a response from Gemini, the audio output is encoded and sent directly to the call, where the user can hear and respond. Is anyone else building apps around AI and real-time voice/video? Would be curious to share notes. If anyone is interested in trying for themselves: Python SDK docs: https://getstream.io/video/docs/python-ai/basics/quickstart/ Github: https://github.com/GetStream/stream-py/tree/webrtc

Yes, you're most likely doing it wrong. I would like to add that "vibe coding" is a dreadful term thought up by someone who is arguably not very good at software engineering, as talented as he may be in other respects. The term has become a misleading and frankly pejorative term. A better, more neutral one is AI assisted software engineering. This is an article that describes a pretty good approach for that: https://getstream.io/blog/cursor-ai-large-projects/ But do skip (or at least significantly postpone) enabling the 'yolo mode' (sigh).
TheAnkurTyagi · 2025-03-12
nice also you can use project-specific structure and markdown files to ensure the AI organizes content correctly for your use case. we are using it on 800k lines of golang and it works well. https://getstream.io/blog/cursor-ai-large-projects/

Agreed, it's rare for any service to outright say "we shadow ban" as done here [1] for example. And, most services still use a form of shadow moderation [2]. So it's perfectly fine to discuss here. Attempts to shut down conversation are just that. [1] https://getstream.io/blog/feature-announcement-shadow-ban/ [2] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33916414

Winds by stream(https://getstream.io/winds/) is now shut down but I did enjoy using it to manage all my RSS feeds. Good thing it's open source been considering self hosting.

Please don't write programs in go. Sure it looks awesome on the surface but it's a nightmare when you get a null pointer panic in a 3rd party library. Instead use Rust. See here for more info: https://getstream.io/blog/fixing-the-billion-dollar-mistake-in-go-by-b…

Something is odd about the timing. This article is dated "Wednesday, March 3 2021" but appears to be identical to https://getstream.io/blog/switched-python-go/ dated Oct 17, 2017 and updated either May 14th 2019 or Sep 15, 2020. Both say "Early this year, we switched Stream’s primary programming language from Python to Go", and there was HN discussion about it on Oct 17, 2017 at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15495562 (397 comments).

"it seems like they are not any more privacy averse than any other messaging service, given that they don't claim to offer any more privacy than any other service." Pro tip, using sweeping words like "any" will almost always make you wrong. Nearly every popular messaging service these days offers end-to-end encryption. I have no idea what you're talking about when you say they "are not any more privacy averse than any other messaging service" When you're worse off, privacy-wise than a Facebook owned messenger, you're not doing too hot. I found a good write up of popular and e2e messengers for you to check out. https://getstream.io/blog/most-secure-messaging-apps/

Your post reminded me of this situation with .IO. that was on HN recently... https://getstream.io/blog/stop-using-io-domain-names-for-production-tr… And then there was the security researcher who took control of 4 of the 7 authoritative name servers... http://www.securityweek.com/researcher-takes-over-io-domains-registeri… Not sure what to do in this situation though.
