If people are interested in the aforementioned other projections, this was a fun article. Stay to the end and check out the AuthaGraph projection! I def need to order one of those for the wall

The streets aren't numbered anyway, so once you have a block (ban) you still need to loop round it to find the building by number (go)

I can't find an image, but I was lost in Japan and had the address I needed, and a shopkeeper took out an ultra local map where each /shop/ was about the size of my thumb, to find where the address actually was.

These are not equivalent by any stretch. Putin is not Hitler.

Google Maps prices are now outrageous https://geoawesomeness.com/developers-up-in-arms-over-google-maps-api-…
Not to mention respecting the privacy of your users.

Yeah - here's some coverage.

That plus shutdowns of things - google is not most stable

>> Is product success a useful metric for whether or not Google cancel services?
Yes. Unsuccessful products get cancelled.
The successful services get to stay but the customers get hit with "insane price hikes":

I think the zoom level could be fixed by chopping off some of the newer map. The MBTA map you linked has way less of each regional rail line.
My bigger complaint with the newer map is I'd rather a map do better at showing geographic landmarks, like rivers as they make it easier for me to locate where the station is in the larger city. For example: https://geoawesomeness.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Geoawesomeness-S…

We just need to learn to be efficient.

That's what the BBC weather forecasts did a few years ago when they upgraded their technology. However, the virtual camera orientation shrank Scotland and resulted in complaints.

They purposely turned away many of those startups with changes in pricing like they did for the Maps/Geolocation API [1].
I'm sure there is an example, but I don't know of one when AWS has ever raised prices on a service.

The Google Maps API is a good example. They increased prices by an order of magnitude while simultaneously decreasing the free tier with one month's notice. [0]

Google invested 100s of millions driving streetview cars around the world. That's hard to match. "Street View cars have traveled almost 10 million miles, covering every single continent and 83 countries in total" (http://geoawesomeness.com/googles-street-view-turns-10/) Mapbox has satellite view

No, the price hike was decided several months ago, see http://geoawesomeness.com/developers-up-in-arms-over-google-maps-api-i…

What am I supposed to read out of this that supports your argument?
> These are not equivalent by any stretch. Putin is not Hitler.
Absolutely true.
Sadly it seems that one similarity is that both of them - and others as well - didn't/doesn't respect treaties, agreements or what I think of as basic expectations of decency.
For this reason I voice my clear support for Nato - as long as we don't overstep our boundaries like we did in Afghanistan. This includes sending troops to the borders og our friends in the alliance. As long as they don't cross the border this is fair game.
Russias problem isn't only that they exercise on the Ukrainian border, but also that they have a history of:
- sending advanced gear to troublemakers in east Ukraine who choose violence over democratic participation.
- sending troops.
- has a history of not only meddling like USA (I don't like this either) but also occupying.
