> ESR That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. I'd almost forgotten about the webcomic. https://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/

The webcomic "Everybody Loves Eric Raymond" got a bit of mileage out of it. https://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/cat/hans-reiser

One of my favorite comic strips features the topic: https://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/so-i-married-a-kernel-program… ...but seriously, he was in fact busy developing that filesystem capability at the time.

"I have to admit it's behaving rather erratically" https://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/cat/comic/page/42 (November 2005)

> [ESR] and Stallman were once close friends I rather doubt that. One of ESR's skills is to insinuate that he's on closer terms with people than he really is, as astutely captured by this comic: https://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/wp-content/ep013.jpg For a lengthy first hand report of an actual interaction between ESR and RMS, there's for instance this: https://invisible-island.net/ncurses/ncurses-license.html Does not look like former or current close friendship to me.

Although I am sure the situation is more subtle than reported, I am reminded of this old ELER: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/taking-freedom-further "What better way to justify the proprietary bits of [Firefox] than a practically stooge [browser] to point at whenever we're questioned!" All this has happened before. All this will happen again.

I'm not a native English speaker, so "big toad" might be term whose sarcasm escapes me, but there are probably about two dozen people in the world who actually believe that Eric S. Raymond is in any way an authority when it comes to programming (one of them being Eric S. Raymond). The following comic strip of "Everyone loves Eric S. Raymond" sums it up pretty well: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/wp-content/images/ep013.jpg

ESR a programmer? Do you ever read the mailing list of the major FLOSS projects out there? Read them and search for his name. It was even the theme of a webcomic in the past: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/show-them-the-code

That reminds me: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/show-them-the-code Actually, every time I see the letters ESR I think of that comic strip. It's so perfect.
ZeroGravitas · 2009-04-29
Third guy in this comic strip: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/show-them-the-code (thanks to whoever posted this in the other ESR thread, I'd searched for an appropriate strip but hadn't gone back far enough to find this gem)

A few years ago, while doing a bit of a family history research project (Knuth was my father's PhD advisor at Stanford), I stumbled across a rather awesome t-shirt design. May I humbly submit "Knuth is my homeboy" as my entry to the CompSci t-shirt contest. (not my own design, to be clear, I just came across it on the internet) https://geekz.co.uk/shop/store/show/knuth-tshirt.html And here is a shot of the recursive shirt in action: https://laughingsquid.com/jacob-appelbaum-donald-knuth-demonstrate-the…

Originally from ELER [1], I believe, but the shop is no longer in operation. [1] http://geekz.co.uk/shop/

I say outcode him. I blew him up last time (a couple years ago). I also supported Leach's efforts (ELER, web-comic). The 'E' in esr stands for Ego. http://geekz.co.uk/esrfacts/fact/16

As a stopgap measure, check the Paul Graham "facts" ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=60357 ) and the Bruce Schneier "facts" ( http://geekz.co.uk/schneierfacts/ ).
