That's what Jesse Schell talks about in his great talk at Dice. http://fury.com/2010/02/jesse-shells-mindblowing-talk-on-the-future-of…

Marketers and game designers are just catching onto the notion of achievements (fake or otherwise), and are planning on harnessing it. Take a look at this DICE presentation that follows these lines: http://fury.com/2010/02/jesse-shells-mindblowing-talk-on-the-future-of…

i went searching for more info as i don't know much about all this, and found Apple is actually responsible for building the app, which is why so few of the many advancements that have come to Google Maps on Android at http://fury.com/2012/06/wills-and-wonts-at-WWDC-2012/ which no-one else seems to be mentioning (the implication seems to be that google made the ios app crappy on purpose, which the above seems to contradict).

Steve Jobs influenced the designer of Gmail 1.0, Google Calendar 1.0, and Google Reader 2.0: http://fury.com/2011/10/i-work-in-technology-because-of-steve/ Quote: While designing Gmail, the Apple mentality led me to approach design decisions from the standpoint of ‘what can I remove’ rather than ‘what can I add’.

The iPad was rumored as far back as May 2001: http://fury.com/2001/05/apples-ipad-the-next-big-thing :P But more seriously, it's not quite clear to me why preorders are particularly relevant here as the marketing approaches are so different. Most iPads are sold directly by Apple, whereas a console game is available through thousands of retailers. It makes sense that those retailers were taking preorders a long time before release. (I'm sure somewhere preorders were being taken for the now perhaps cancelled Win7-equipped HP Slate, despite the lack of an official release date.)

Interesting video about future of "these types" of games: http://fury.com/2010/02/jesse-shells-mindblowing-talk-on-the-future-of… and comments about it on YC: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1142424
