Funranium Labs is a blog by a radiation safety and laser professional on nuclear topics, lasers, regulation, and safety stories.
What HN saysHN commenters link it for its spent nuclear fuel overview and a first-hand laser eye injury story, though one finds a recent post's style grating.

I also found the writing style grating, but not for a lack of efficiency; it just felt kind of empty and fake-deep. (Definitely also wondered whether an LLM editor or co-author was part of the equation.)
For contrast, I recently saw this blog post off an HN submission and loved it. Very un-efficient but engaging and full of character.

https://www.funraniumlabs.com/2024/04/choose-your-own-radiation-advent… Is a nice overview of the various other fuel disposal solutions. Worth reading for the section on reprocessing alone. How big of a superfund site do we want to create?

> And 100W is HUGE for a laser. And 5W is huge for a laser. (Class 3R is up to .005W and Class 3B is up to .5W.)
It's kind of irrelevant, but I think it's worth pointing out that while those are legal/safety/sanity limits [0], there's a lot of companies that completely ignore them. Here's one that has quite a few 5W lasers [1], and some that are supposedly up to 50W which would be insane if true. As for 100W being huge... the US Navy is testing ones in the tens of kW [2]. Might eventually make for one hell of a point defence system.
That being said, photon drives still SUCK. Not having to carry the drive helps, but it's still in the Newton-per-100MW-power range.

I wonder if any of them have experimented with cold brew yet. Personally, my preference is Funranium Labs' (http://www.funraniumlabs.com) Black Blood of The Earth (BBoTE). The upside is that you don't need to carry around alot of apparatus: You can get a good Americano equivalent with 3:1 or 4:1 BBoTE to hot water. Or you can have it straight.
One downside is that it's supposed to be stored cold; but it can handle 2 days of room-temperature (considering how it is shipped), so maybe it's not too big of an issue. Another downside is most of the BBoTE offerings are single-origin, so things go out of stock from time to time, but there are some blends available: Death Wish is one, and the proprietor has been known to do custom batches of Dunkin Donuts and other blends.

A fun related story about how even nominally professionals need adult oversight when working with high powered lasers.

The laser would ricochet from disintegrating drones (think of the props) and cause collateral damage to people on the ground.

It's expensive, but not wildly so. Yes, it's potent. If what you're looking for is a cup of coffee, you're supposed to dilute it with water.

regarding LLM giving wrong advice on chemicals, that reminds me of that article https://www.funraniumlabs.com/2024/04/phil-vs-llms/, where the author asked (referencing the East Palestine train derailment)
> I fed “how to respond to a vinyl chloride fire” into ChatGPT and it told responders to use a water fog on the water reactive chemical. This would have changed a train derailment/hazmat spill/fire emergency into a detonation/mass casualty/hazmat emergency

One that I'm aware of - Black Blood of the Earth - https://www.funraniumlabs.com/the-black-blood-of-the-earth/
> Fast forward 14 years. An acquaintance working and living in Japan went on holiday and discovered a bar with this exceptionally beautiful rig for the preparation of Viennese Triple Cold Extraction Coffee. Upon sampling this, he felt that, and I quote, “I could see colors that weren’t in the visible spectrum, and could vibrate through walls.” I looked at this I said to myself, “Hey, you’ve got enough virgin laboratory glassware lying around the house that you could probably build something like that.” Probably several somethings, actually, but that’s beside the point.
It has a picture of the original glassware in Japan and his first iteration in the kitchen. A sibling comment links to Yama glass ... which is out of Taiwan. The similarities might not be coincidence.

Here's some informed speculation and commentary/explanation from a radiation safety expert:
https://www.funraniumlabs.com/2023/11/ultraviolet-rant/
"Having now had a chance to take a look at the likely culprit, assuming a repetition of the previous incident, all I can say is You Completely Irresponsible Fucks. I am having flashbacks to yelling at Naomi Wu for irresponsible deployment of germicidal UV designs in 2020."

The version of that story that I read is much longer, by Funranium Labs. It is entertainingly written, but I wonder how much is urban legend:

Nuclear facilities of any sort are a good example of places where guns can get pointed at you, even if you're a U.S. Marshal on your way in to apprehend a fugitive.

Alcohol, lot of alcohol.

Relatedly, the writer here offers a photo of some beautiful Japanese apparatus for cold brewing, a few paragraphs down.

Start by spending a winter in Antarctica. There's always demand for semi-skilled and quasi-skilled labour there. Plumbers, carpenters, construction workers, lab techs. You'll even get paid for it, and are almost certainly not going to die.
Read some blogs about life in a frozen hell before you go - you may very quickly realize whether or not this kind of thing is for you. Most people find that it's not. [1]
> Antarctica’s problem is that you’ve run as far as a person possibly can to “escape”. I heard about every relationship shattered by the distance to the Ice…and all the ones that ended before you even thought about coming to Antarctica. The strings of jobs and towns abandoned as you tried to make a new start, a new life, in the next town, or state, or country over. But once you get to Antarctica, there’s simply nowhere further to go. Then the station closes for the winter with no more flights for nine months. When things start going wrong for you again, because the common denominator in all the situations you’ve fled from is you, you’re trapped. So you’d better get acquainted with yourself OR you can just drink yourself to oblivion and kill the days so that you aren’t even there. I’m not going to put a number on how many people took the latter route, but I’m having a hard time thinking of any that really made the former work.
