> It’s the best solution
It's the least worst solution for "whole-workplace" systems, but most people who are saying "won’t use Google for anything cloud" probably self-host or use something like PurelyMail (https://purelymail.com/) or FastMail (https://www.fastmail.com/) for their own emails
helph67 · 2023-10-18
Have been using Fastmail for many years and recommend them. Unlike Google Fastmail respect your privacy! https://www.fastmail.com/
neonnomad · 2023-10-10
I would recommend Protonmail because you can also have a plan and use your own domain. The interface is much better than Google IMHO and the spam filtering is up there as well.
Other alternatives:

Have been a customer for years, great service run by humans.

I highly recommend Fastmail [0] for this purpose. I have been with them for 5 years, and they're rock solid. I have ~10 domains on it, they support wildcards (send/recv at [email protected]), the composer has sane defaults for multiple domains (e.g. replies are sent from the address it was mailed to) that can be overridden when you need, and you can easily create masked emails using your own domain.
$50/yr for all that is a steal. They don't charge you per-domain or have any funky tiered pricing for the stuff that matters.
Disclaimer: I am not related to them, just a happy customer :-)

I have migrated to https://www.fastmail.com/, it was quite painless. Happy to pay for it, happy to have email on my own domain. Can recommend. (No affiliation, just a happy user.)
chunkles · 2022-12-08
Having seen people argue about this here before, my guess is you're going to get one of three recommendations. Zoho (https://zoho.com), Fastmail (https://fastmail.com, Proton (https://proton.me)
__d · 2022-03-10
I recommend Fastmail: https://www.fastmail.com/
It's not free, but you get decent support, and it's their whole business, not a sideline, so there's a good chance they won't yank it.

Fastmail [1] is a great alternative to Gmail. I pointed a few domains at it for family members to use.

Fastmail | Philadelphia, PA | Platform/Ops Team Lead | ONSITE | https://www.fastmail.com/
Hey, I'm Rik, CTO at Fastmail. We provide high quality, rock solid email (and contacts, calendars, and more) service. We're big into open standards and open software and contribute to both. Our platform team keeps the servers running at their best, and keeps improving what "their best" means. We need someone to be part of, and lead, that team.
This is us: https://www.fastmail.com/about/
…and I'm particularly keen on our values: https://www.fastmail.com/values/
You can read about the job at https://www.fastmail.com/about/jobs/2020-06-platform-lead/ and apply at [email protected]

> I don't know what mail I'll switch to
Hop on https://www.gandi.net/, choose a domain name that looks professional (such as mylastname.me or some other clever variation) and never have to ask that question again.
If you ever want to go back to gmail, bring in your domain with gsuite (https://gsuite.google.com/).
As for an alternative UI&host recommendation, go for fastmail: https://www.fastmail.com/
zaksoup · 2018-04-11
We use G Suite at work and I'm not a fan of the new calendar design. Material design works nicely on a tiny phone screen but on a 32" 4k display it just seems like there's a lot of unused space. That's probably the ridiculous size of the panel, to some degree, but frankly, I just don't think Google's done a great job of designing desktop user interfaces that aren't search.
For folks interested in avoiding your email provider also being an advertising company, I switched to Fastmail* last year. They've got gmail import and full IMAP push support (something gmail canned years ago).
I'd also love to see other hosted alternatives to gmail. I looked into rolling my own on EC2 but decided I didn't have the expertise to do it "right"

I've recently moved to Fastmail and I'm blown away by the service. Everything feel well thought, well integrated, their web interface is fast, their mobile app is great, they respect standards... I could continue all day.
From reading their blog[0] you can tell that they are passionate about email.
It is a bit pricey for a personal email with a few accounts, but I'm happy to give them their well-earned money.

I've been a happy customer of https://www.fastmail.com/ for some years now (and used Gmail before). I highly recommend them for anyone considering leaving Gmail. You pay them with money instead of data.
shanecleveland · 2017-04-24
I've always been happy with https://www.webfaction.com. Includes one-click installer for Django. Webmail options are basic. But they are an option, or users could receive mail through an email client. But I would also recommend forwarding mail services to https://www.fastmail.com.
iyn · 2015-09-19
Check out Fastmail (https://fastmail.com), it's the best email service I've ever used.
walkingolof · 2015-09-12
I switched from gmail to Fastmail (http://www.fastmail.com) two years ago mostly because I don't want to feed the monster. Surprisingly, in many ways, the move was a step up in usability, I was prepared to scarify some comfort, but it turned out that I didn't had to.
Fastmail offers everything I need, great mail client, calander, contacts, notes, great app for both Android and iOS
I also got my family accounts on Fastmail, we ended up creating a family account so we can share folders, calenders, contacts etc.
yes, it costs money, but I think its worth it.
*) I'm not affiliated with Fastmail in anyway, just think the service provided is great.
NeutronBoy · 2015-07-19
I'd definitely recommend Fastmail. Fast, clean interface, easy to use, very customisable (including wildcard mailboxes), and great support. They've got a really interesting blog [1] with some technical content on there as well.

I'm kind of surprised that Linus uses Gmail.
It's likely that he'll actually catch a Googler's attention, but for many of us, user feedback is not an option.
@jacquesm's http://jacquesmattheij.com/ham-or-spam-gmail-not-to-be-trusted-for-imp… is another recent instance — but again, there's no call to action.
Gmail is great for some people, but I prefer having more control, and I highly recommend https://FastMail.com if Gmail is failing to meet your needs.
senjindarashiva · 2015-07-06
I am using https://www.fastmail.com with great results.
They do have some features in there interface to ease the transition like being able to both send and receive mail from your old address directly from there interface.
conradk · 2014-11-19
Same here. I used to have Google Mail, Google Contacts, YouTube, Google Search, Google News, etc.
I was feeling more and more dependent on one company's goodwill. A few months ago, I renewed my Fastmail [1] account for 3 more years, being very happy with the service. I use DuckDuckGo [2] as my main search engine and love it. I use Opera as my main browser. The only Google services I use regularly now are Android and YouTube. YouTube being totally optional and Android only being an interface to data located elsewhere, I feel free. Sure, Google has access to my data, but they can't lock me in.

In case you haven't seen it, you might consider Fastmail [0]. They have a great webmail client, they just released native mobile apps (for both iOS and Android at the same time, wow!), and they are very much working to expand the standards to meet the needs of modern e-mail.

Do not use any that doesn’t let you configure your domain. Never use that one email address @<provider domain> unless they also let you have it or free (like Tutanota does). Just don’t. Imagine it doesn’t exist. No matter how ruthless you are it will be a friction in moving to a different provider.
I will list some:
- http://mailbox.org (I use it; this is my main provider and my personal domain is setup here; they are decent and private; their spam filter is not the best but much better than Gmail’s; other services on their suites are nothing to write home about; its you get what you pay for -- though their new pricing is not much less than other providers; I am on the old pricing and I don’t see myself moving to anything else unless they enforce it. Pathetic support - they simply don’t respond most of the times. Well, I guess you get what you pay for.)
- https://tutanota.com (I use it, not on the domain though - and not really for “public” usage; please know that you just can’t have IMAP access - either use their app, or the web app, no other client - or at least that is how it was last I checked. They are extremely responsible, really good team, keep releasing new features - both for usability and privacy; much better than Mailbox on many aspects)
-https://fastmail.com/ (It’s the “HN Exclusive Favourite”. Too expansive for my usage and that is their first paid tier which is very limited; people swear by their mail client - I have never used it and I doubt I will. I…

Fastmail (https://www.fastmail.com ) | System Engineer | Philadelphia, PA | HYBRID | Full-Time
At Fastmail, we’re bringing the human touch back to email. We have three email services, Fastmail email, Topicbox email lists, and Pobox emailing forwarding.
We’re looking for a System Engineer to keep those services responsive, functional, reliable, and secure. You’ll spend your time hands-on maintaining, improving, and building out the infrastructure that runs our services. For the record, though, our systems are mostly Debian, all self-hosted. You’ll definitely end up working in Bash (and probably a little bit of Perl). (If you’re curious: we also use Ansible, Prometheus, Grafana, MySQL, Nginx, Postfix, Consul, Apache, Cyrus, and of course many other things.)
Find more details here: https://www.fastmail.com/about/jobs/2022-system-engineer/
Email us at [email protected] to introduce yourself, tell us what interests you in working with Fastmail, and let us know what makes you believe you'd be a great fit here! Send us a resume (as a PDF, please). More importantly, though, have something else to say! Let us know what you’re interested in, what makes the job interesting, and anything else you want to tell us up front.

Fastmail (https://fastmail.com) | Frontend/Javascript | Melbourne AU | Onsite (eventually) | Full Time
We’re looking for an Email Client Application developer to join the Fastmail team in our Melbourne CBD office (after the restrictions lift - obviously we're all WFH right now!)
Together with the rest of our team, you’ll work on our email services Fastmail, Pobox, and Topicbox. When the vast majority of people get email for free, the reason people choose a paid service is because they value both privacy and a great user experience.
You’ll be working on our best-in-breed mail clients, providing super-fast, powerful access to webmail, calendars, contacts and more. You’ll work with our collaborative team of front- and back-end developers, designers and researchers. Improving our customers’ interactive experience, keeping it secure and a delight to use is what we do, every day.
Our interfaces are built upon our own Overture framework and the new email standard JMAP. It gives us full control from top to bottom to build the right solutions to difficult problems. If you’ve worked with other MVC application frameworks, like Apple’s Cocoa, you should find Overture easy to pick up.
You’ll have the opportunity to work at many levels:
* building features from scratch with our design and product teams
* optimizing and improving existing code
* tracking down and fixing elusive bugs reported by customers
There’s always an interesting new challenge to solve!
Check the full…

Hello, primary author of Overture here. Wasn't expecting someone to link to this old site again!
Anyway, a few quick points. Overture is the basis for both the FastMail (https://www.fastmail.com) and Topicbox (https://www.topicbox.com) web apps and really does provide a great basis for building large, performant rich applications. However…
I do not recommend other people user Overture directly at the moment (although you might like to look at the code base for some useful ideas you can steal). We don't currently have the resources to build all the documentation, tutorials and other resources needed to build a community around it, and with that in mind we are currently not committed to non-breaking changes or semantic versioning (we can update our own apps at the same time as any breaking change). We originally open-sourced this when we were part of Opera, mainly so that if we parted ways and needed to build something new, we could still reuse all this code (it couldn't end up as proprietary Opera code!).
I'm happy to answer general questions here however if people are interested.

I don't think fastmail is going to help you. They are subject to legal requirements too and probably American jurisdiction also despite what their particular position is. https://www.fastmail.com/blog/fastmails-servers-are-in-the-us-what-thi… People love to hate Google but they're just doing what any corporation subject to law is going to do.
