I’ve discovered CardGames.io when I found out that the author [1] of one of Firefox addons I use, Redirector, passed away. It’s a pretty straightforward, lightweight web app by the same author, with a bunch of card games (and some non-card, too) to play online. Here’s a blog post about the beginnings of CardGames: https://einaregilsson.com/story-of-cardgames-io/
Today I’ve discovered that it keeps getting updates!

Maybe one of these:

Note the site I linked is very dodgy, so probably not trustworthy.

FWIW, you can use an extension like Redirector (https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/) to automatically redirect any Twitter URL to Nitter with the following:
Redirect: https://twitter.com/\*
to: https://nitter.net/$1
Hint: Twitter to Nitter
Example: https://twitter.com/yishan/status/1586955288061452289
Applies to: Main window (address bar)
I'm also using this for 'fixing' referral URLs but that's another story.
aquova · 2022-05-04
I use a Firefox extension to do it - https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/. You might be able to do some local DNS with a wildcard shenanigans, but this is much easier to set up.
I actually don't redirect my Reddit requests, since once in a blue moon I will want to comment on something, which libreddit doesn't support. However Invidious does have the option to let you follow certain channels, and since I don't comment on YouTube videos, it covers all of my use cases, so I redirect all Youtube traffic to it.

I use the Redirector[0] browser extension to do this, and it works great.

What happens to me is that sometime I do not realize I am sharing a link that I can see while my friends cannot (maybe because I always clean cookies at every Firefox start, so websites think I am a new user, so I am allowed to see something for awhile?)
Anyhow, you are more then right!
Btw: a great trick somebody published in HN some years ago still works well for many websites: just add a dot (".") at the end of the domain (not the end of the URL), and the website treats you like an anonymous (so it often lets you see content and bypass the pay wall): I do it with the Guardian, all the time, so
https://www.theguardian.com./international
instead of
https://www.theguardian.com/international
(you can even use this https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ plugin to automatically rewrite some urls by adding that dot at the end)

Reposting from another thread earlier.
---
I still have a few accounts I glance at from time to time. Hockey, Game Devs, Artists, etc. who haven't migrated away despite everything, so this is kinda obnoxious.
I created some Redirector (https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/) rules to redirect Tweet and Twitter Profile URLs to their HTML embed equivalents.
Should be able to just import the rules and it seems to work alright with some caveats.
* I have no idea if this will continue to function.
* I've only tested some random links from my Discord and Slack groups.
* Profile links only show the most recent 20 tweets.
* Tweets will show quote-tweets, but no replies (though maybe that's a good thing).
* Obviously won't work for mobile.
Rules are at https://gist.github.com/robotblake/a0f020381c1a919cf9720f9ae09b3093
Edit: And just realized /u/justnotworthit posted the link earlier too.

This is one of those moments where I realize other folks on HN have almost exactly the same Firefox setup as me. Nice list of add-on recommendations!
I would add in a couple more, for anyone tempted to switch away from Chrome or Safari:
- Redirector: https://www.einaregilsson.com/redirector/ Very helpful for redirecting "new" reddit to old.reddit.com, AMP links to normal links, Twitter to Nitter, etc.
- RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/reddit-enhancement-suit… Provides built-in image preview and lots of other subtle goodies for old.reddit.com. I have a very hard time browsing reddit without it!
- Sponsorblock for Youtube: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/ If you watch any amount of YouTube on channels with lots of sponsors, this is a great way to keep your sanity. Works just like sponsor skipping in the Overcast podcast client.

A general one that covers xcancel:
https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/
Use this:
Redirect: https://x.*
to: https://xcancel.$1

I'm using https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ with a couple custom rules. Unfortunately, it appears the author has died (https://github.com/einaregilsson/Redirector#tribute), and the project is in a maintenance state. But it does exactly everything I need, and I disabled the auto-update, so I should be safe from any takeover attacks. Thank you, Einar.

I personally prefer to use redirector to do it. It has served me quite well so far.

Sadly late 2021 the original dev passed away. Someone has taken over stewardship of the project but it is currently moving slowly and they are seeking more contributors (javascript skills are a plus).
He was a bit of a hn user and seemed good natured and pleasant. Though I didn't know him I was sad to hear he'd passed both as a Redirector user and a fan of good people doing good things. I know he'd mentioned being happy to get recognition on here. https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=einaregilsson
I really enjoyed the original devs write up on creating an easter egg specifically targeting Mark Hamills avatar in game. https://einaregilsson.com/an-easter-egg-for-one-user-luke-skywalker/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30715746

Might I suggest https://libredirect.github.io/index.html and https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/

Recommend you use the Redirector browser plugin (https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/) and create a rule with these options:
Redirect:
https://*.reddit.com/ to:
https://old.reddit.com/r/$1 excluding:
https://old.reddit.com/ Example:
https://*.reddit.com/ → https://old.reddit.com/r/* Applies to:
Main window (address bar)

And if you want to automatically get redirected to xcancel: https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/
ajot · 2024-02-08
Yep, available for multiple browsers and quite powerful in my opinion: https://www.einaregilsson.com/redirector/
_dain_ · 2023-08-05
This is cool but imo it makes more sense to have URL redirection as a browser extension. That way all twitter links resolve to nitter, not just ones from a search engine. I use this one https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/

Some popular sites have alternative interfaces, e.g. Twitter → Nitter. They are a much better user experience if you just want to lurk. Configure your browser to automatically redirect:
• https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ (use for Imgur → Rimgo until Privacy Redirect has it)
aembleton · 2022-03-09
Install https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ and you can set up rules to redirect from twitter to nitter.
notfoss · 2021-12-24
While I like the concept, the title of this article is misleading, as nowhere on the GitHub page or even at https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ does the author highlight the privacy implications of this.
As mentioned in another comment, https://github.com/SimonBrazell/privacy-redirect seems to be more relevant for privacy minded folks.

I use the Redirector extension to mitigate the problem of "getting into the habit" by automation: https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/
It redirects all my googling to Startpage so I don't have to change my habits at all.
I recently discovered Privacy Redirect which apparently took the idea a step further by providing presets that redirect visits to popular web services to their privacy friendly alternatives by default and thus mitigates the need to set up a redirector extension yourself:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/privacy-redirect/
lovelearning · 2019-10-05
Install this "Redirector" add-on for your respective browser.
Then create a new redirect:
EDIT: Sorry, I got the include and redirect reversed. You need to redirect censored domain to uncensored domain.
Include Pattern:
*.wikipedia.org/*
Redirect to: $1.0wikipedia.org/$2
Pattern type: wildcard
Example URL is just for testing. Use any 0wikipedia URL.
I use this too, but for distraction avoidance. Any addictive website is redirected to my todo page :)

On Firefox I use Redirector: http://einaregilsson.com/redirector/
I have it set up to handle Reddit and Wikipedia. News sites and Twitter don't get to run JS thanks to NoScript, so I usually don't have to do anything extra to get a lightweight experience there.
brillenfux · 2016-06-05
Thanks. Or use this[1] with this[2].

Of all the many ways to automate that redirect, https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/ isn't bad.
Redirect: https://x.com/*
to: https://xcancel.com/$1
and
Redirect: https://twitter.com/*
to: https://xcancel.com/$1
( also reddit to old.reddit, various cdn image servers to deliver hi-res versions, etc )
