They have a "Contact Us" as well as https://github.com/cmu-db/dbdb.io/issues so it's possible someone submitted it. Also, this project is apparently run by Andy Pavlo who is a fascinating follow on Twitter (or https://discuss.systems/@andy_pavlo) for all things database

https://discuss.systems/@palvaro/116286268110078647 Arguing with Gemini Home Assistant about whether or not it can turn off the lights. When the user gets frustrated and tells the LLM to kill itself, the LLM turns off the lights.

Recently saw this through https://discuss.systems/@pkhuong/114532017716618023 which summaries why this would be useful: > Flagging old live (i.e., potentially immortal) allocations is easier (https://github.com/backtrace-labs/poireau) and more closely matches the goal of identifying why the heap grows instead of entering a steady state. Ej. Why is Sidekiq memory consumption growing over time.

One of Masayoshi Son's recent slideshows has been doing the rounds on the FediVerse this week. If you've seen people making odd comments about 'Goose was not valued.' or 'Goose value 71.' or 'eggs do not lay eggs' over the past few days then Son's 2026 presentation to shareholders is what they are going on about. * https://discuss.systems/@dev/116807460725864716 This is the context that a lot of us didn't have. Son has been doing this since 2010, the goose laying golden eggs going back to at least 2014, and the 2020 earnings report having a run of 23 slides of geese and eggs. Other weird things over the years have included dog telepathy and a representation of COVID-19 as flying unicorns jumping out of a ditch. As the Bloomberg people pointed out, this significantly came to the attention of the world outwith Japan, which largely boggled at some of the slideshows sans context, in 2019 and 2020. Part of the world is discovering this afresh in 2026. * https://vice.com/en/article/these-delusional-powerpoint-slides-show-ho… * https://trillium.substack.com/p/golden-geese-stirring-the-pot-shop * https://group.softbank/system/files/pdf/ir/presentations/2020/earnings… * https://group.softbank/media/Project/sbg/sbg/pdf/ir/presentations/2011… (https://group.softbank/en/news/webcast/20100625_01_en) Some of the criticism over the years has focussed not on the more oddball aspects of…

All lectures available on Youtube: https://15799.courses.cs.cmu.edu/spring2025/ One topic we will discuss is the Cascades optimizer architecture. There has never been a good description of how to implement it but the Microsoft Research Database Group just published a book that describes SQL Server's implementation. Microsoft has made the entire book available for free: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/extensible-query-… Query optimization is the hardest topic in databases and this is the first time I am offering this course. I am going to make mistakes and say incorrect things in my lectures. Send corrections to [email protected]"
