I've been listening to his mixes for a long time now -- a couple of my favorites:
* http://davidbyrne.com/radio/david-byrne-presents-the-beautiful-shithol… Music from those countries that Trump doesn't want immigration from
* https://www.mixcloud.com/Todomundo/may-2014-fatboy-slims-favorite-cove… Beatles covers. You've heard all the songs before, now they're different.
* https://www.mixcloud.com/Todomundo/october-2013-covers/ Other covers. A-Capella Under Pressure. Macy Gray doing Creep.

David Byrne did an excellent article based on cycling through Detroit:

Interesting to read about Glagow being used as a positive reference for post-industrial regeneration!

For those who enjoyed this article, Byrne writes a superb blog: http://journal.davidbyrne.com/

I trust David Byrne.

For some reason I stopped listening to new music around 1990. Recently I tried to find new stuff on the internet. I made my favorite discoveries on David Byrne's playlist.
He posts a new playlist only once a month, but it's not always new music. I don't know much about how music evolved after the eighties. I hope David Byrne has followed this better than me. We may be both merely listening to new oldfashioned music.

There is no one silver bullet but I can tell you why I choose to live in Des Moines.
For me it is about the community. I like building things. Here, in addition to building my own startup, I am part of a group of people working to build a great ecosystem. It's exhilarating and inspiring to be surrounded by other people who are working together to make Iowa a great place to live. Being a part of shaping that nascent identity is a good feeling.
That's, of course, not the only reason to live in Des Moines. The reasons, priorities, and motivations are different for everyone. I've heard everything from people moving here to raise a family (low crime, great public schools) to cost of living (paired with the low unemployment the standard of living way more than averages out), to the hundreds of miles of public bike trails, to the growing music and arts communities, etc.
But really, it is hard to know whether Des Moines is the right place for you since I don't know you. It may not be, but I love it here.
It is also always interesting to read outside perspectives. David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) recently wrote about Des Moines and I think it captured a lot of the small "quality of life" details that are hard to pin down without experiencing them from a fresh perspective. http://davidbyrne.com/des-moines

See, but this is very much the problem. Records provided an unequal distribution of wealth amongst performing artists before the internet. Why pay to listen to an up-and-coming classical artist when an exquisite recording of Chopin's work all ready exists?
Now, the internet has magnified this even further. An incredibly narrow band of artists are currently being compensated in any way (live performance, merch, cds), and this trend appears to be continuing. In general, the life of a performing musician pretty much sucks. Take a blog post by David Byrne I found on here awhile ago http://journal.davidbyrne.com/2009/08/080809-edinburgh-so-how-does-it-… . He's working pretty damn hard, and he's famous!
I'm not saying that file sharing is inherently wrong, I'm just saying deep down, we know there's a system that will rise out of this that will undoubtedly be regulated. I'd rather be having that discussion, than saying 'oh, I wouldn't have paid for that'

why not skip the "article" (ad-bait) and link straight to the source: http://davidbyrne.com/radio/david-byrne-presents-the-power-of-song-to-…
or his list of playlists, a new one released on the 1st of each month: http://davidbyrne.com/radio#filter=all&sortby=date:desc
David Byrne is an underappreciated American treasure. His 2018 show was spectacular.

Oddly, I found this graphic more informative than the a16z "AI Playbook" currently ranked first on HN:

David Byrne has a book where he rides a bicycle around cities around the world and makes similar observations.

Yes, that proximity seems important.
A Des Moines story made the rounds here recently, and David Byrne wrote about this (in relation to NYC):

I thought they were already complaining about the rent in Asheville! (Though it's all relative.)

Here's a couple views that aren't as stale as one written 25 years ago about a childhood that ended 42 years ago.

"That Owen used this male tool to talk about what men are really like in bed turns our workplace preconceptions on their head."
Um, no. Not really.
It's sort of clever (albeit clumsy), but nothing new, nothing revolutionary, nothing is on its head.
For that, see this: http://www.davidbyrne.com/art/eeei/

David Byrne had a recent piece about writing music to be heard in particular environments, which seems related: http://journal.davidbyrne.com/2010/02/021410-valentines-day.html

There is a video here http://davidbyrne.com/art/art_projects/robot/index.php. looks a little rough, article said it is an early release, but from some angles you for a second think it is real.
