"Since 2008 I’ve launched 60 different apps." from https://david-smith.org/about/ amazing!

The iOS and Android app stores likely hold the most examples of high scale one person businesses. Someone already mentioned Apollo. I'd add https://overcast.fm and https://david-smith.org (maker of many apps, including the wildly successful widgetsmith). There are plenty of other really successful apps that are just one person operations.

Apple is referring to the 6/6S/7/8 case. It is indeed extremely popular. Check out these stats from a year ago. On this app (which has a broad appeal), the 6/6S/7/8 had a 47% share. iPhone 5s/SE had 11% The old SE form factor is great! And those who like it, like it a lot. But you're clearly wrong if you take that to mean that the new SE form factor is an unpopular one. https://david-smith.org/blog/2019/06/24/the-popularity-of-the-4-dot-7-…

Same here. High-resolution tablets are great for reading comics and web pages (and for reading code in Vim!), but for real long-form reading, e-ink is unbeatable. I have a Kindle Paperwhite 3G for this purpose that always travels with me. I even get my Instapaper articles on it: http://david-smith.org/blog/2012/10/11/instapaper-on-the-kindle-paperw…

The adoption rate for iOS6 has been amazing compared to previous versions that weren't OTA. Over 60% in less than a month (according to a statistically significant and diverse user base source: http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/). I recall seeing some iOS5-only apps when it was adopted this widely after a few months.

A few personal usage tactics I’ve been experimenting with, since I’ve been dealing with smartphone overuse since 2005: 1) No social media apps. 2) Four icons on the home screen (for iPhone, go to this site: https://david-smith.org/blank.html click share button and add to home screen. Change wallpaper to black. Each black icon you add to the home screen will take up a space where an app would have been, helping you focus on apps that you find most important) 3) Airplane mode when I’m on vacation (so I can still use the camera but won’t be tempted to reply to a text). 4) Few notifications other than calendar, phone, and text. Absolutely no email notifications. Selective and timed Slack notifications since I’m often mobile and don’t want to be the bottleneck at work. 5) No games. 6) Limited video use. Overuse hasn’t been a problem, so I don’t set hard guidelines on this. 7) Leave phone in car [clearly I don’t live in SF] or at home during scheduled time with loved ones. 8) Wear cellular Apple Watch and carry AirPods in pocket when leaving phone at home - if there may be an important call coming in while I’m intentionally preventing myself from working while mobile. 9) Keep phone charging at night in bathroom on do not disturb. No checking during middle of the night bathroom usage. 10) Limit non-essential apps to informational apps - like HN. Smartphones are tools first or they can be toys first. That depends on the goals and discipline level of the user.

Mechanical watch: https://monochrome-watches.com/the-elegant-mixture-of-time-and-space-d… Prague’s astronomical clock does that too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_astronomical_clock#Moon More about spherical moonphases: https://www.the1916company.com/blog/variations-on-the-moonphase.html A smartwatch complication: https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2019/09/26/moon-plus-plus/ > Geneva Moon seeks to provide a highly accurate, visually pleasing indication of what the moon looks like right now, right where you are. Use blank icons to fill in the rows. Kludgy? Sure, but it gets the job done: https://david-smith.org/blank.html

According to various iOS app stats, the 1st generation iPhone SE is about 3-5% of the fleet, making it roughly as popular as the iPhone 11. https://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/

Your app vendors are making their business decisions. They can hit 98% of customers by coding with the modern, feature rich, man hour efficient APIs. The short tail of early model iPads in use don’t justify the larger expense to develop and test using the older APIs. Apple doesn’t say it out loud, but they can’t just decide to support the new iOS versions on the first few versions of hardware. There just isn’t enough processing power there to deliver a respectable user experience with the new software. Sure, it worked fine when new, but as processor cycles got more plentiful, they still all got used by programmers. ␄ * one site is showing 98% of users running iOS 12 or higher. * just 0.1% are stuck at iOS 6. * the site: http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/template_

Hoping to be wrong, checked the data. It's been about a year for iOS 12 and Android Pie. According to the latest numbers, iOS 12 is at 84% [1] and Android Pie is at 27% [2]. I also don't think that waiting 3 years will push Pie percentage much higher. Android 6.0 is more popular than 8.0 and 7.0. I don't envy Android devs... Can't imagine it's fun to develop apps when you have to target OSes released 4+ years ago because 21% of devices still run them. For iOS the "4+ years" number is way below 1%. It charges fast enough that you can wear it almost 24/7 if you plan ahead and charge for a bit in the morning and at night https://david-smith.org/blog/2015/09/21/how-to-wear-your-apple-watch-2…
andrewmcwatters · 2018-03-15
This isn't true. On iPhone 6, running the latest iOS version, with a brand new battery, there is a significant delay before you can speak. Instead, you have to hold the home button down. https://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/

This should probably link to the source at https://david-smith.org/blog/2018/03/14/apple-watch-series-3-adoption/ , unless i'm missing something.

> If anything, Apple hardware is probably used for longer than Android phones. Do you have any data to back this up? Looking at version market share, I'd say that there are way more people using older Android phones (1)(2). The second most used OS (10.X at 18.1%) goes as far back as iPhone 5 and the most used (11.X) goes as far back as 5S. Nanite · 2017-12-20
looking at https://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/ and apparently still ±50% of currently active iPhones seem to be a 6(S)(+). Which is a LOT more than I expected. I don't see how Apple is going to ignore this one.
zwetan · 2017-02-14
So that means you will use pre TLS v1.0 to support those browsers that can not deal with SNI. You must feel very smart to be able to support old Android browsers like Gingerbread which represent 1% of the Android market share [0], and iOS pre v4.0 browsers which represent less than 0,1% of the iOS market share [1]. Now according to TLS/SSL support history of web browsers [2] your server is vulnerable to BEAST, POODLE, CRIME, etc. Congrats your SSL cert is useless. I keep an eye on David Smith’s published iOS version stats[0] which say around 23% of his users are running a 32bit CPU. This includes iPhone 5/5C and older iPads. https://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/

Makes it convenient that the watch was never marketed, promoted, or sold as a sleep tracking aid... That said, @_davidsmith 's new sleep tracking app for wOS2 is quite nice, and I found that his charging strategy does the trick - https://david-smith.org/blog/2015/09/21/how-to-wear-your-apple-watch-2… I only needed 15-20 min in the morning and evening to get to all day usability.
dionidium · 2015-09-08
It's not an unreasonable choice given that most users are running iOS 8 or later: 9.X 0.1% 8.X 81.3% 7.X 13.5% 6.X 3.1% 5.X 1.9% https://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/
bigiain · 2015-06-03
For devices that _can_ have the OS upgraded - stats seem to show a remarkably high level of upgrading by users, at least for major version numbers: http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/ If you scroll down to "Device Breakdown (sorted by Usage)", you see a bunch of devices with 90+% stuck on the "last supported OS version" - 97% of iPad1G on iOS5, 97% of iPhone 3GS and iPod Tough 4G on iOS6, 91% of iPhone 4 on iOS7. Even including thise devices, they're showing 75% on devices on iOS8 and 20% on iOS7. I'm in the "left behind" category - with both my iPad1 and Mac Mini single core being "stick" at iOS5 and OS X 10.6 respectively. Im somewhat disappointed at the lack of patches for the known security holes in iOS5 - especially since those numbers still show over 3% of the iPads in use are not upgradable past iOS5...

They actually said this in their September 9th press release, although most people missed it: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/09/09Apple-Unveils-Apple-Watch-Ap… "With Apple Watch, developers can create WatchKit apps with actionable notifications and Glances that provide timely information. Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch." Someone from Apple also essentially reconfirmed this earlier today on the WatchKit developer forum. Edit: here's the source that first tipped me off to this detail hidden away in the press release: http://david-smith.org/blog/2014/11/06/expectations-for-watchkit/
pooriaazimi · 2013-09-18
There's also David Smith's stats (he's added an hourly widget): http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/ Currently iOS 7 is at 4.6%
MaxGabriel · 2013-06-21
Everyone I've seen has very similar numbers: https://mixpanel.com/trends/#report/ios_frag http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/ http://stats.unity3d.com/mobile/index-ios.html David Smith's numbers throw a few more percentage points to iOS 5, but he's a smaller sample size and his stats are two weeks old. Unity is similar, but it looks from the UI that their data is generated monthly. Mixpanel's are the most up-to-date and their numbers mirror Apple's.

I find this an unnecessary flame. That’s why Apple introduced Smart App Banners for iOS and they work just fine. The problem is just with those redirect you to a separate app download page. http://david-smith.org/blog/2012/09/20/implementing-smart-app-banners/
smackfu · 2012-11-01
Interesting. Other sources make it seem like the rate of upgrades has stalled. For instance, this chart has iOS 6 at low 60's percent for all of October: http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/

I work on ScoreMobile and we're at 79%. Probably over 80% by now. 60% of Pocket users in five days. http://getpocket.com/blog/2012/09/more-than-60-of-pockets-daily-ios-us… http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/ http://insights.chitika.com/2012/ios-by-device/ The Build & Analyze podcasts (which the author of The Magazine hosts) has talked about it multiple times http://5by5.tv/buildanalyze/96 I do appear to have overstated the 80% number but at this point in time but by the end of the year I'd be shocked if it wasn't over 80% based on the rate of adoption and then number of iPhone 5 being sold.
