Compose (http://compose.io) offers RethinkDB, and doesn't look too expensive, but no free tier :-(.
eyepulp · 2016-03-18
We dislike managing PG too, so we've been migrating to https://www.compose.io/postgresql/ It's not for every situation, but they have replication and failover and downloadable daily backups with the option for SSH-only access. Been using them for about 6 months on some smaller DB projects, and haven't had any hiccups.

They seem to do bunch of smaller startups like these

Compose.io offers hosted RethinkDB instances, I'd recommend them: https://www.compose.io/rethinkdb/

You can spin up RethinkDB today with https://www.compose.io/ (it's surprisingly easy, and their support is awesome). It should be pretty easy to get a RethinkDB Heroku plugin based on Compose. If the community doesn't get around it, we can probably do it internally pretty easily.

Taking a look at it, I would do something similar to what compose.io does with its pricing model (https://www.compose.io/pricing/). Giving out a free tier, gives the best introduction to something like a database as a service.
It was what brought me over to a paid plan at compose.

The Compose family has grown into a vibrant group where folks can feel comfortable being themselves, living a balanced life. We welcome you to enjoy comfort when taking risks, collaborate with spirited peers, and to unleash your creative personality.
Some great things about Compose:
* Work from anywhere! (As long as you're legally able to work in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom).
* Many neat conundrums to solve.
* Self-managing, distributed decision making. Choose your projects. We're deadline averse and quality focused.

Our hiring process is nifty. We request a work-sample upfront that closely resembles the work you'd be doing within your role.

We want to know, objectively, who is going to both enjoy and crush the work. We have several positions open for candidates:

We (Compose, YC s11, now part of IBM) are hiring for a bunch of positions. Notably —
* Platform engineers (https://www.compose.io/jobs/#platform-engineer): if you like working on distributed systems, containers, and tremendous database problems in the real world, this is for you.
* Designer who speaks HTML/CSS and possibly javascript (https://www.compose.io/jobs#designer): work on a wide variety of projects, from stunning print materials to cutting edge web applications. If can draw on a strong foundation in color theory, layout, and typography you'd probably like this role.
* Support Engineer (https://www.compose.io/jobs#support-engineer): we have thousands of paying customers, almost all developers. If you like helping people solve problems and want to learn more about different databases along the way, this is for you. This is a good role for a developer with great written communication skills.
We are remote friendly, but can currently only hire in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, and Israel.

Here is one third party link I found which still shows old pricing: https://www.g2crowd.com/products/firebase/pricing
If this link is correct the new plans have a changed a bit, but pricing per GB seems to be more or less the same. A few dollars here and there. But this shows that the plans can and will change.
Smaller services like Compose.io (https://www.compose.io/pricing/) and mLab (https://mlab.com/plans/pricing/) seem to be charging around USD 15-18 per GB of DB for MongoDB. So either Firebase is less resource hungry for Google or Google's scale is allowing them to reap better efficiency or Google is subsidising Firebase and giving it almost at cost.

Any ideas on how this is different from compose.io's offering: https://compose.io/postgresql/?
Hourly billing?
simcop2387 · 2016-04-20
JSONB is definitely in 9.4. We used that at the company I worked at previously. There might be improvements to it in 9.5 that I can't recall but it's definitely usable and production ready in 9.4
EDIT: Looks like [1] talks about what he was mentioning, there's a number of functions they added to improve the use and experience in 9.5.

I think wallflower is right: Technical writers generally get paid less than what developers make. But every company is different. At Compose.io, for example, I think it could be more of a blended position, which is to say that you could be writing documentation and contributing to the codebase [1]. There may not be much of a pay gap at companies like that.
There are also other benefits. Technical writing positions are generally extremely low stress jobs where you have ample time to finish your work, learn new technologies, etc. And as I mentioned before, many of these positions are remote, so you have the opportunity to live in places with low costs of living.

Typo:
"Our two main offices are located in San Fransisco, California..."
should be: "...San Francisco..."
Also, why does your map show SM, CA, rather than SF, CA? Did you move and not yet update the map?

Compose.io also looks like a good choice https://www.compose.io/postgresql . I have no affiliation with them, just wanted to try their service for attractive pricing.

I think his hostility comes from the fact that if you google just "postgresql json" the second hit is the official documentation that goes over jsonb right in the second paragraph.
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/datatype-json.html
You can also see that the very first link outside of the official documentation:
https://www.compose.io/articles/is-postgresql-your-next-json-database/
Explains the benefits of jsonb and how to use indexes.
If you're going to include a database, at the very least do 20 minutes of research on it. If that can't be given, then just don't include something.
That's like saying "I've just installed MongoDB and read the intro documentation page, I'm now going to benchmark it against a MySQL cluster, which I have years of experience with, and that I helped develop." (E.g.: they developed ArangoDB, so they should be experts in at least that, right?)

Utilizing rethinkdb on compose.io with heroku does take some hackery, mainly around deploying to the same colo (amzn us-east-1), and then using heroku env variables to store your ssh key that will be used to connect your api/svc to compose box. See this article for more info:
https://www.compose.io/articles/tunneling-from-heroku-to-compose-rethi…
I was never able to get the referenced python script working, but using a shell script inside `.profile.d` did the trick.
