I use UTM without any issue (running Windows 11)... but for what it's worth VMware announced both Workstation and Fusion are now free for Personal Use:
https://blogs.vmware.com/workstation/2024/05/vmware-workstation-pro-no…
You can also buy a Commercial subscription for $120/year

For what its worth there is a tech preview: https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2021/09/fusion-for-m1-public-tech-…

There is no such thing as a "best database for everyone". I intend to migrate to FoundationDB in the main project I'm working on, but it is not necessarily the "best" option for everyone (see https://blogs.vmware.com/management/2020/03/changing-the-foundation-of… for a good writeup).

> shipped bare-minimum maintenance to India
The development team is not in India and is doing more than bare-minimum maintenance, they have "a great surprise lined up for Q3, something very interesting for Q4, and something very big for H1"[1]

We deploy 2 cpu and 4 GB for office 2016 VDI users. That's tight for a developer.
Unless you're offshore and your wasted time is not as valuable, that's a poor VDI use case that doesn't make sense
Fight it with vendor recommendations.

If you are on a windows machine it might be worth looking at PowerCLI [1] as well, it has a very active community and they just started added some basic cmdlets to access to the SRM public API [2].

I suggested the author to review my company product SpyStudio that has a free version and is being used by Microsoft MVPs and VMware to troubleshoot Windows issues.
If you need a trustworthy source, here is a video from Peter Björk ( http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/author/peter_bjork ) showing how to troubleshoot a ThinApp package: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sLxeoB7Bho

This blog entry contains a video of the talk along with some other relevant links.
The talk is quite entertaining, reasonably deep, and highly recommended if you're interested in such things.

> I was really surprised at how well Timescales compression worked. It was pretty much comparable to best in class columnstores. Only the row-by-row query execution engine was holding it back. Perhaps something that future versions of postgres can help with.
I think zedstore[0] might be something that could help here. I've mentioned it in the past but one of the best things about postgres is it's extensibility, and if timescale rides that wave (and maybe contacts zedstore to get this integration started early) it could be awesome.

> Didn't look into Druid in detail, but did try out Hive. Both of them look more suitable for cases where there is significant engineering effort in developing the data ingest and structuring pipeline. I wouldn't recommend either to a small team. With a measly triple digit TB database size both seemed overkill.
Thanks for this -- I haven't tried it yet at all but will try to remember this. ClickHouse was already first on my list for hobbyist->enterprise scalability but this cements it.

VMWare's desktop hypervisors were announced to be free to use a little while ago:
* https://blogs.vmware.com/cloud-foundation/2024/11/11/vmware-fusion-and…
You need to register an account/e-mail address for a free account:
* https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?articleNumber=145581
After which you can download VMware Fusion Pro and/or VMware Workstation Pro:
* https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/368667/download-and-li…
This seems to be a perpetual licence (?), so as long as it can run on the underlying OS you can continue to use it. Not sure if there's any 'phone home' functionality to track things (like has been seen with Oracle VirtualBox).
kotaKat · 2025-09-08
> They removed the auto-update functionality (even the notification!) from the app
Oh, they didn’t want to deal with the “token” bullshit they added to the VMware download site that the updates come from. That’s why.

It was easy to miss between all the back and forth, but VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion are now free for all users, including for commercial use [1], and since last month, ESXi is also free, again [2].

There is no reason to use virtual box on Windows nowdays, Hyper-v and vmware are free for personnal use and are much much better than VirtualBox.

VMware has also had a patent on live VM cloning (called it VMfork) for quite a few years now. I worked on the team that built related features. Feature itself was in the desktop product. https://blogs.vmware.com/euc/2016/02/horizon-7-view-instant-clone-tech…
Live migration had some very cool demos. They would have an intensive workload such as a game playing and cause a crash and the VM would resume with 0 buffering.
jsheard · 2024-12-03
> Workstation is now free for personal use,
It's now free period, even for commercial use, and even if you want to pay for support they won't take your money anymore once existing contracts expire. In other words Workstation is probably going on life support and won't have any significant development going forwards.

Arm64 Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
VMWare Fusion (now free beer) and Podman.
Still running the beta of Fusion which I have literally had zero issues with. I have not benchmarked podman.

I am running a hypervisor (https://blogs.vmware.com/arm/2023/12/15/esxi-arm-fling-1-15-refresh/) on my Raspberry Pi 4. Rock solid.
Currently running virtual machines: * Home Assistant (https://home-assistant.io/) - with USB passthrough of USB stick to read out my digital electricity/gas meters, Zigbee and Z-Wave * Homebridge (to allow my Eufy video doorbell to work with Homekit) * Pihole
All are running from iSCSI storage served by my Synology NAS.
I am running an older Pi (3) on demand in my garden as a client for my media server to play music on garden speakers.

What I take from several kbs and articles is they're removing all of that as individual products, and they're selling the new all-in-one "vSphere foundation", only in a subscription model, that will have some of those functionalities and then offer some others (like NSX) as add-ons:

They've also said they're trying to spin off the EUC element (i.e. Workspace One, Horizon and associated bits). (Potentially Carbon Black may be up for and exit as well).

In a license audit, Oracle will charge you a full CPU license (currently $47,500/core for Enterprise) for every CPU in your VMware cluster, regardless if the database is running on it or not.

Contour is a gateway: a controller that manages Envoy proxies at the edge of a Kubernetes environment. Istio is a service mesh: a controller that manages Envoy proxies at the edge and alongside each workload. If you are using Istio, you probably don't need Contour.
A year ago, a number of Envoy gateway maintainers (including Contour) announced their intention to join up to build one implementation of an Envoy gateway. They haven't made a lot of noise since, but they are apparently up to v0.4.
https://blogs.vmware.com/opensource/2022/05/16/contour-and-community-b…
You can also use the Gateway API to manage Istio. So, if you are using Istio, you probably don't need Envoy Gateway either.
Wherever you look, it's still Envoy. Unless of course you look at Linkerd, who have their own thing.

Do you mean migrate a physical Linux server to a VMware VM? There is/was a tool called p2v converter that can image a physical server to a VM. No idea how well it is supported these days but I've used it in the past for this purpose when I was dealing with "kittens vs cattle".
[Edit] It appears they removed it from downloads due to some security bug. [1] I imagine you may still be able to find it somewhere in their forums or open a ticket and tell them you accept all risk.

It sounds like vmklinux is deprecated but still shipping for older drivers if I'm understanding their documentation. https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2019/04/what-is-the-impact-of-the-vmk… vSphere 6.7 (which they're still supporting and shipping updates to as it was only released last June), includes the vmklinux driver stack.
For those reading along at home, that's a shim layer to link GPLed code into the closed source hypervisor.
It's absurd that the company responsible for some of the most blatant license violations in the industry (and is still actively continuing to violate after a decade) is trying to push itself as open source friendly.

I expect lots of people care, though if it's an option for you VMWare does have a public beta of Fusion for the M1s[1] and I have seen people running Windows (11 even) under it.
