One reason is that it made a great case study for modernizing an app from Delphi 7 to the latest version.

I find this blog consistently negative (check other posts.) Although this post is interesting, and I know little about dBase and this is a sad story, I am simply not sure how accurate all of the blog as a whole is. I can best suggest, take its statements as someone's personal opinion, not necessarily as fact, ie but with a pinch of salt.
> It is believed that - alongside the BOLD source code (missing for more than 10+ years), the BDE and many original dBase source code was lost during the ill fated Borland + Corel merger (which was eventually called off).
This is confusing because the article is supposedly about dBase, and I have no idea why Bold is relevant. It's an example of where I feel the general negativity of the blog veers into random discussions.
To the best of my knowledge, the Bold source was not lost. In fact, Embarcadero open sourced it several years ago. The blog post has details: https://blogs.embarcadero.com/bold-for-delphi-is-open-source/ I worked there at the time though I did not drive its open sourcing, but it is a positive move, and clearly contrasts the blog's statement. It appears actively maintained and updated these days. I would differentiate 'lost' from 'owned but not made available publicly'.

I'm an outsider, although I've heard cool things about Delphi. So, trying to find examples of what this looks like, I was naturally interested in the "Cool Apps" section. But my biggest surprise was that Beyond Compare was listed in there. I see that thing in a lot of Windows .NET shops, I always figured it was .NET-based (I guess I confused association with dependency?)

> Try writing something like Spotify in WinAPI and that's not even a complicated GUI either.
Fruityloops, now FL Studio, was written in Delphi and to my knowledge still is[1]. When ot launched there were no options but Win32 for Delphi.
That's just one example. Win32 makes it reasonably easy to skin things, and back in the 2000s a lit of programs did.

Delphi does - eg https://blogs.embarcadero.com/getting-started-wit-python4delphi/
I use Lua from Delphi and vice versa regularly

And at the other end of the spectrum you have 1M lines of code compiled in just 19 seconds, using latest Delphi compiler (https://blogs.embarcadero.com/delphi-10-4-2-compiler-speed-improvement…

There are a lot of companies using Delphi in some very cool apps. There has been a lot of them published recently on the updated blog site at Embarcadero.

Lazarus and Free Pascal are the free and open source alternatives to Delphi. There's also FMXLinux:

Source: I'm a satisfied user of Delphi, but only currently uses Professional and haven't tried out FMXLinux yet.

One of the cool things about FP is that it already runs on the apple M1 under Big Sur [1], although of course it is a work in progress.
For Delphi, maybe somewhere next year. They did put it on the road map, but there are no guarantees [2].

Embarcadero is now owned by these guys: https://www.ideracorp.com
Their primary modus operandi seems to be: buy tech that's still bringing in money, fire everyone except a small core of people to keep the product barely alive with minor updates, sell expensive long-term licenses to enterprises.
It's no surprise that "the latest official version of Bold is is for Delphi 2006" [1] and that the goal of the opensource version is "is to encourage customers active on the library to share their more recent versions" [2]

Borland never made CP/M software. This account matches my memory from back then: http://blogs.embarcadero.com/davidi/2008/11/02/38933

For the same CPU architecture, compiler and FPU control word, you should expect the same results.
For example, on x86, many C / C++ compilers interpret long double as a 64-bit float while others interpret it as 80-bit extended precision.
And extended precision TBYTE (in Intel syntax) does actually take up 10 bytes. There's a speed loss for not aligning, but no correctness loss. In a possibly related note, however, Apple has bizarre and unnecessarily strict alignment policies for Mac OS on x86:

>So, i generally considered Pascal a dead language.
There is GNU pascal. https://www.gnu-pascal.de/gpc/h-index.html - they page says that they do support some of the Delphi language features/extensions.
GNU pascal is a gcc frontend - so it must support a lot of platforms https://gcc.gnu.org/frontends.html
So there are probably some people who are still using Pascal, not just as part of the Delphi IDE.
It should be possible to make a web framework for GNU pascal, the executable could then run on any server.
Also there seem to be several options for web frameworks for pascal and/or delphi, interesting if people are using it for production (never used any of this personally)

it's not the mainstream, however there seems to be some action going on here.
