Here's the posting on Scott Hansen's blog about the making of the original Jotly video. Quite inspired, although I shudder to think what would happen if Jotly actually proves to be a success. I'm not ready for anti-marketing copycats. http://blog.iso50.com/25994/jotly-share-everything-with-everyone/ Incidentally, Scott Hansen is also the guy behind Tycho Music. I just love unexpected connections like that.

It All Falls Apart - The Sight Below. Skulltaste - Mux Mool. World Class Listening Problem - Don Caballero. Hitman soundtracks by Jasper Kyd. I came across The Sight Below and Mux Mool from the excellent ISO50 blog. Browsing for music through the site can be a real time-sink but you'll definitely find something new. http://blog.iso50.com/category/music/

Most of the ones on the front page aren't the best (after skimming through for a while). I think it is difficult to pick a winner based on voting, but there are definitely some that are better than their original logo. Edit: There are a few nice ones within the first ~50 of this: http://blog.iso50.com/logos/gap-redesign-contest/

This guy has done an admirable job of appropriating the visual style of Scott Hansen, of iso50.net / Tycho, who has been making design in a similar vein for many years. Here are two designs I was immediately reminded of; both because of the style and, for these two in particular, the subject matter. http://www.merchline.com/iso50/productdisplay.3969.p.htm / http://www.merchline.com/iso50/categorydisplay.2586.c.htm I enjoy Scott's work and have purchased a few of his posters. This one is my favorites: http://blog.iso50.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/iso50-northern-lights… Even further back in the aesthetic pedigree of this work you'll note similarities to the work of Shepard Fairey, who created the OBEY giant phenomenon and, more recently, the iconic, 3-color HOPE poster for Obama's presidential campaign. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_Fairey

If anyone wants to know more about how the Penguin logo was designed, Alex (the designer) has a great blog post here: http://blog.iso50.com/2010/03/10/plancast-penguin-development-process/

So, what i think is missing is this link that explains exactly what this dude is writing about: Thanks for everyone’s input on the new logo! We’ve had the same logo for 20+ years, and this is just one of the things we’re changing. We know this logo created a lot of buzz and we’re thrilled to see passionate debates unfolding! So much so we’re asking you to share your designs. We love our version, but we’d like to see other ideas. Stay tuned for details in the next few days on this crowd sourcing project. [1] So, in this context, i think the rant makes a bit more sense. Equally funny is iso50's description of this as "a tropicana,"[2] which is a zing i never thought i'd hear. But, i want to throw out there that this impulse to violently reject or passionately protect logos has an analog in language. "All living languages are always changing"[3] and same goes for logos and brand identities. Much like language or fashion, logos evolve and whatever. And for everyone that's all "oh that's shite, i could do better," I invite you to really try your hand at this sort of thing with actual real life constraints and (gasp!) real life clients. There's all sorts of design work you can do without a client, but it takes a special type to actually, you know, design for somebody else and more hopefully, design with someone else. My parents and I painted one in my bedroom. It was pretty cool, for the time. There was a kit that showed you how to trace one out and paint it. http://blog.iso50.com/271/supergraphic/

I have to point out the Motorola Exorciser M6800 development system used by this camera: http://blog.iso50.com/tag/kodak/ This was the first system I used professionally and I wrote an emulator for it: http://exorsim.sourceforge.net/

But how long will it be until some savvy internet user successfully riles people up against an innocent competitor or a personal enemy? Remember John Engle vs Stockart? http://blog.iso50.com/5778/save-jon-engle/

There have been a ton of other designs submitted to ISO50. Some aren't too bad: http://blog.iso50.com/2010/10/06/gap-redesign-contest/

Looks more like they're trying to visually compete with American Apparel's use of Helvetica. http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gawker/2010/10/gaplogo.jpg http://www.eternitemedia.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/American_… EDIT—it looks like someone at iso50 had the same idea: http://blog.iso50.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/gapdesign2sm.jpg It's a shame. Their condensed old style serif font subtly reminds me of Nirvana's condensed serif font. http://www.survivingthestores.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/gap-logo.… http://www.midnightincoventry.co.uk/site/images/stories/nirvana-a.jpg
