What's fascinating to me as that it's happening at the same time as the "X as code" movement.
Devops: Infrastructure as code.
or dbt's viewpoint on analytics as code (see https://blog.getdbt.com/building-a-mature-analytics-workflow/)
So I'm seeing it as an exercise in finding sweet spots. There are things that have been mostly manual or point-and-click and people are seeing wins from defining and managing them as code. Usually in terms of reproducibility and testability. Then there are things that people have traditionally done in code (e.g. admin UIs) where maybe most of it can be abstracted away into a point and click tool.
No-code works great until it breaks, and then your ability to debug is going to be very constrained. We're fighting that problem with some no-code ETLs using Stitch at work today, for example.

It is primarily a tool for analytics engineers (coined by the dbt team I think[]) to write more robust, managed, version controlled, DRY analytics SQL. The tool is designed to be run on an analytics data warehouse (Snowflake/Bigquery/Redshift) and generally used to provide fact & dimension tables to BI/visualisation tools.
I get your confusion, I don't think it is designed for a DBA, but it makes a great tool for an ETL engineer, especially in the modern ELT paradigm.
> tool to avoid hiring a DBA
Yes in a way. With ELT tools like Fivetran/Stitch and highly flexible "zero-tuning" data warehouses like Snowflake/Bigquery, there is very little need for a DBA unless it is a very large organisation, and the role will more likely fall to a "Data Engineer" type role, ultimately much the same as a DBA, just a modernisation.

Reminds me of Panoply, which had native SaaS integrations, a managed Redshift instance on the back-end, and a BI layer on top. Basically a fully turn-key "modern data stack" [1]. The stack is way easier to operate than it has ever been before, but still requires folks with expertise to manage each of the components.

"Transform" step is happening after the load to data warehouse here. https://blog.getdbt.com/what--exactly--is-dbt-/ is a pretty good overview.
