Its also worth reading the 4.3.0 blog post which mentions the removal https://blog.getbootstrap.com/2019/02/11/bootstrap-4-3-0/
spuiszis · 2017-10-25
That's not accurate on breaking changes, there will be additional ones in the future: > We’ve done our best to prevent breaking changes, but we had to sneak some in. Regrettably, we’ll also have a few more coming in Beta 3, too. However, we’re clearly outlining all of them for you to make the upgrade and testing process as easy as possible. Looks like there's a more discussion of Sass on Stackoverflow than Less - http://www.arepeopletalkingaboutit.com/tags/less,sass For what it's worth, Bootstrap 4 is switching from Less to Sass - http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/

The documentation makes reference to an announcement on the blog, which doesn't seem to be available. If anybody wants to keep watch, be my guest: http://blog.getbootstrap.com. I've been keeping an eye on the pull request (https://github.com/twitter/bootstrap/pull/6342) and the gh-pages branch (https://github.com/twitter/bootstrap/tree/gh-pages) for other Bootstrap 3 information. http://twitter.github.io/bootstrap/customize strongly suggests there will be another RC after this one.

If anyone is looking for a basic summary of "What's new", the best I found was their blog post about plans for v3: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/12/10/bootstrap-3-plans/

sooo... Counter(re.findall(r"[^a-zA-Z]([a-zA-Z]+)[^a-zA-Z]",requests.get("http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/02/07/bootstrap-2-3-released/).conte… I see one occurrence of 'shit'. I'm not sure how I feel about your pansy ass semi-outrage of someone else's release page language. Oh, wait. I feel nothing, approximately what this entire conversation thread is worth.
coderdude · 2012-12-09
Bootstrap was going to ditch Glyphicons (and IE7 support) with 2.2.2[1] but it looks like they're either holding off on that or they changed their mind. I recommend using Font Awesome[2] instead of Glyphicons. [1] http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/11/09/glyphicons-font/ [2] http://fortawesome.github.com/Font-Awesome/

> I have a feeling that they just tinker… Totally! First, they took the easy way out with a complete rewrite for Bootstrap 4. "With Bootstrap 4, we once again rewrote the project to account for two key architectural changes: a migration to Sass and the move to CSS’s flexbox. Our intention is to help in a small way to move the web development community forward by pushing for newer CSS properties, fewer dependencies, and new technologies across more modern browsers." For Bootstrap 5, they didn't even do that much — just new and updated components (including checks and radios), new and updated utilities, significantly-enhanced forms support, RTL support, improvements to the grid system, and more. https://blog.getbootstrap.com/2021/05/05/bootstrap-5/

Jekyll has nicer templating, but when you work on large website, Hugo is just much faster. Bootstrap team is moving their docs to Hugo: https://blog.getbootstrap.com/2019/02/11/bootstrap-4-3-0/#branches-hug…
rangibaby · 2017-01-12
http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/ > When we shipped Bootstrap 3, we immediately discontinued all support for v2.x, causing a lot of pain for all our users out there. That was a mistake we won’t be making again. For the foreseeable future, we’ll be maintaining Bootstrap 3 with critical bug fixes and documentation improvements. v3 docs will also continue to be hosted after v4’s final release.

Here is the alpha 6 release blog post from a few days ago https://blog.getbootstrap.com/2017/01/06/bootstrap-4-alpha-6/
chrismbarr · 2017-01-11
Why is this at the top of HN right now? It's still in alpha. It's a good alpha and I've been using it on some projects, but I think some people might be mislead that this is the final release with the "4.0" in the title. The most recent version is alpha 6, and it sounds like they are shooting for their first beta version next: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2017/01/06/bootstrap-4-alpha-6/
mcintyre1994 · 2016-09-21
If you download the source, Bootstrap is all Less[0] with an official Sass port[1]. For v4 they're moving to Sass too.[2] :) [0] http://getbootstrap.com/css/#less [1] https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap-sass [2] http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/
yRetsyM · 2016-09-06
They mention in the original alpha release article this was a mistake. They plan on supporting and bug fixing for the foreseeable future with bootstrap3 http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/
mtmail · 2016-09-05
The blog post for the first Alpha lists a couple of major changes compared to Bootstrap 3 http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/
strictnein · 2016-04-21
Didn't they make that move about 8 or 9 months ago? http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08/19/bootstrap-4-alpha/ > "Moved from Less to Sass. Bootstrap now compiles faster than ever thanks to Libsass, and we join an increasingly large community of Sass developers."
roryokane · 2014-01-31
The release notes on the Bootstrap Blog are better: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2014/01/30/bootstrap-3-1-0-released/. That page gives an overview of the biggest changes, with screenshots, before listing every change individually. It also mentions a change missing from GitHub changelog: the release of an official Sass port (https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap-sass).
cmicali · 2014-01-30
They switched to border-box in 3.0. Note in 3.0 release notes: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/08/19/bootstrap-3-released/ Code at top of scaffolding.less: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/blob/master/less/scaffolding.less
borton · 2013-08-20
RC1 to RC2 was much more than a bug fix release! http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/08/13/bootstrap-3-rc2/
erlend_sh · 2013-07-29
That "get" will quickly become a "got", as they've finally moved away from github.com/twitter to their own independent github.com/twbs repository, as was the plan for a long time: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/09/29/onward/
yesimahuman · 2013-07-18
There was a tweet on the @twbootstrap account today, looks like August 19th: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/07/18/ante-up/

A big heads up for anyone thinking of switching. Bootstrap 3 "Drops IE7/FF3x support entirely." ref: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/12/10/bootstrap-3-plans/
rkuykendall-com · 2013-03-06
Bootstrap 3 will actually be dropping submenu support: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2013/02/07/bootstrap-2-3-released/ ( Bootstrap 3 update > "Dropping submenu support." )
tensafefrogs · 2013-01-04
Bootstrap 3 is switching to glyphicon fonts, which I think look better than the FontAwesome stuff. http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/12/10/bootstrap-3-plans/ You can see the bootstrap 3 branch in the bootstrap github project.

Thanks for the insights & fun facts. After also reading this: http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2012/09/29/onward/ I still don't get what this actually means for the future of BS, is it good news, or bad news, is everyone too polite? Good to be remembered here of Foundation again. I was recently asked for BS alternatives and couldn't named any.
