Um, what about DabbleDB? I'm not sure there was anything bad about it. Except that one day it just went away.

It might be that the lesson pertains here, too.

This reminds of the work @matasar and @attaboy did back in 2007 on Dabble DB:

It was built by a small, low cost team. At the middle of last year it was run by four people, but then the company got bought by Twitter: http://blog.dabbledb.com/2010/06/140character-dabbling.html

Yes, although the company was acquired less than a year ago -- http://blog.dabbledb.com/2010/06/140character-dabbling.html

I thought DabbleDB would change the world too :-D
It is not going to happen for several reasons.
One of them is that the company just got acquired by twitter.

I hope they release the code as open source...

We've been using this - see http://blog.dabbledb.com/2009/04/introducing-dshbrd.html for an initial post about what we've been up to.
(I normally post as avibryant, but had to create this new account to get around noprocrast. sigh)

There are image processing algorithms and then there are image processing algorithms, but: we do some very simple image processing in Dabble DB and were surprised by how much library support Squeak had for it.

Uh-oh. Are there any other companies than Whisper System that had an actual end-user product that Twitter has acquired -- and then not killed off?
I don't recognize that many from:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Twit…
Except for Dabble DB (Smallthought Systems) and Posterous:

I hadn't realize how extra-cruel the dabbledb thing was until I read this:
https://blog.twitter.com/2010/more-dabbling
"Up until about a year ago, we[twitter] used an online database called Dabble DB to track and share information about our projects internally. While we’ve since moved that project management tool in-house (...)" [In other words: we realize this was a great product, and we still killed it, because, meh profits for twitter?"]
For those that didn't know what DabbleDB was:

So, while an acquisition might be great for the owners of soundcloud, I'm rather terrified as a user...
