On that note, I'd recommend the title scene in the Iranian movie Qeysar [0] from 1969.
A number of the same motifs from 2.5k years ago are still around in Indo-Iranian culture.
Some of the older generations of Pakhtun Hindus still tattoo in that style [1], as a number of the central tribes of the Pakhtun community were Saka [2]. A granddaughter from the community has been working on documenting the culture for a couple years now [3]
On a separate note, highly recommend watching New Age Iranian Cinema (1965-1980ish). It's good stuff.

Though this site is under appreciated and less than up to date now they produced a fantastic interview with the director and opening sequence director. The additional images and videos make it really shine.

I love the title sequence (even though that was a different design shop): https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-expanse/
They clearly drew from some other highly technical areas in their design: for example incorporating Réseau plates or drawing on the visual layout of air traffic control screens.

If the Björk video, All is Full of Love, on http://jsmpeg.com site looks sorta secondhand familiar, it was cited as a large influence on the makers of the Westworld title sequence: http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/westworld/

Awesome! Gonna spend a weekend on this.
And an easy way to share my personal all-time favorite title sequence, Delicatessen:

Thanks for this.
Lots of great sequences from the 80s presented there along with on my of my all-time favorite openings - Ghost in the Shell [0].
I've always felt failing to put together a compelling opening is a missed opportunity, particularly for a series. It's a hook, a primer to put the audience in mind of the best eras and episodes every time.

love the film to pieces, never for the accuracy (tho it did accurately introduce many to the concepts of phreaking etc, simple stuff, tonedialing etc.whether technically displayed properly.....oh gosh it's all coming flooding back now)
There was a quote from Softley in the Art of the Title article about the opening titles http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/hackers/ where he says it was a Bridge. Being of a certain age, this totally was part of it. It was for the most part the peak of the modem/bbs days... and there was a transition between the more analog days to the real digital days, the days of the internet - where alot of the hacker culture, and things like the demo scene etc...became diluted.
Anyways, never took it that seriously, I mean the characters alone are so out there, but it was inspiring from the whole computer thing to the music (legendary soundtrack, introducing a lot of ravey/UK type stuff to ppl, on the cusp of the whole electronica thing) and just the 90s nostalgia/tech nostalgia - it's great!
And come on! Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller alone...the former going on to such massive success....

I had to look up the guy that actually designed it, and I realized they have pretty much made all the intro cinematics I adore from TV shows.
Westworld, American Gods, Man in the High Castle and Halt and Catch Fire.

I have to link to North by Northwest. Just incredible when you consider it was done in 1959.

On a related note, here is the process for making the titles. It's nominated for(and most likely to win) an Emmy.

Here is an interview I enjoyed with the director of the title sequence - it includes sketches and concept art.

I worked on the post-production of Moon, particularly the titles and the screens in the base and Gerty's face. Pretty humbling to have someone pay so much attention to what we did!
It's funny to hear about the Microstile/Eurostile differences - when we had to replace type that was on the real set we made new elements using Eurostile, so there are probably some inconsistencies.
The Bank Gothic/gradient fill/outline choice definitely haunted us for a while after - it was already a bit of a scifi poster trope but it's got out of control since. I've cringed a few times seeing posters on the tube and wished we'd picked something slightly different. I remember being keen on an outlandish faux-Cyrillic face at the time but it wasn't legible enough. I did win the argument about colour though - my boss at the time did a bunch of concept frames with translucent orange type for the main credit lines... there's a little interview with him here: http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/moon/
Maybe it's too obvious to bear mentioning but there's a big foreshadowing in the shot where Sam Rockwell's credit appears - a second copy of his name dissolves up out of focus further back inside the base...
The OCR-1A type was set by me, in a slight hurry as I recall, type-on effect and all. It had to look different to the Bank Gothic credit lines, and I'm sure we tried the obvious Eurostile and it wasn't readable or was too heavy for that amount of text. It feels a bit of a case of too many…
