Adzerk - Durham, NC - Full-time, permanent - (http://www.adzerk.com)
We're looking for a devops engineer and both junior and senior developers. More info on our jobs page (http://www.adzerk.com/job-openings/)
Adzerk is focused on helping publishers make more money from their ad inventory by building a revolutionary ad serving platform. We believe that making advertising a viable business model for publishers ensures the future of a free and healthy internet. We love nothing more than helping a great publisher be rewarded for their hard work and help them continue to create awesome content.

We didn't look at Mono because the amount of code we had was fairly trivial and rewriting it in Rails actually let us simply alot of it and write it better than we did before.
I love Mono though and I am actually using that on my other startup (http://adzerk.com) instead of rewriting since I have so much more code there.

They do run adverts from http://adzerk.com. Maybe it was them?

I think they know their ad system sucked so I read somewhere that http://adzerk.com/ is now handling almost all of their ads after starting with their display ads.

http://www.adzerk.com/ seems to be the only real upstart in the game, as far as I can tell.

Adzerk (http://adzerk.com) - Durham, NC (also Raleigh or Chapel Hill)
Ready to put all those ideas about scalability into practice in a situation where you really need it? We're helping Stack Overflow and other sites that you've probably heard of serve billions of ads per month. At that scale, things get very interesting.
As an engineer at Adzerk, you'll have the opportunity to work on all parts of our system, from the front-end web UI to the engines that serve the ads. Our system uses Node.js, C# (Mono), ASP.NET MVC, jQuery, MongoDB, Hadoop, and RabbitMQ.
We're also looking for someone to fill a more devops-oriented role. We use Chef to administer our systems on AWS, build and deploy using Travis-CI, and monitor using DataDog (a pretty cool startup based around statsd).
Performance and scalability are our two primary concerns, and with the traffic and growth rates that we're experiencing, lots of the lessons that you've learned start to break down. Because of that, it's not as important what you know right now – what matters is how quickly you can learn and adapt.
* Your work will have an immediate and profound impact on our product and business.
* We ship code dozens of times a week, and you will write code and push to production on your first day.
* You will be responsible for making important decisions about what tools and libraries we use.
* You will have a direct role in building the team, helping us choose additional team members as we grow in size.

You can, but you will only be able to show the ads that load on the first page. Google prohibits you from refreshing the ads without performing a full page refresh.
This made sense before AJAX, because people were simply refreshing ads every few seconds to increase impressions/clicks. But now with AJAX, there's no good way to get new ads.
Google has/had an "Adsense for AJAX" project...but no one has heard anything about it in ages. [1]
I've vaguely read that DFP Small Business from Google may let you refresh ads through AJAX, but I'm not certain. Would be an avenue to check into. [2]
Alternatively, you could just say "screw you google" and run something like Adzerk [3] on your site (which allows AJAX refreshing), but the problem is that you have to find and manage your own ad inventory.

Some people think so, it is not entirely clear. Perhaps it has to get more clear that it's not for Google to do anything about it though, if that's their theory.

If you're interested in bringing functional/reactive style code to an existing application, you might also be interested in splint.js: https://github.com/adzerk-oss/splint.js
I wrote a blog post about it recently: http://adzerk.com/blog/2015/06/splint-functional-first-aid-jquery/
In a nutshell, it's a jQuery-friendly packaging of the ClojureScript runtime and the Javelin cell library, usable in existing applications. You basically write ClojureScript in JavaScript syntax.

Hmmm, I just tried to login to Adzerk using my account that I registered back in March 2013. It doesn't work anymore. I can still enter my username/password, but nothing happens. I can even reset the password.
Perhaps it's because when I signed up, ad serving was claimed to be free for up to 100 million impressions per month. That changed: http://adzerk.com/blog/2014/01/an-update-about-new-free-adzerk-account…
"Certainly! If you signed up for an account before January 6th 2014 and were actively serving ads, you can still serve as many impressions as you want for free up to 100 million impressions per month. However, to contact Adzerk support after your 30-day trial ends, you must purchase a support app in the Marketplace."
So I guess they disabled my account because I wasn't actively serving ads? It would have been nice if I had received some kind of notification at least.
