I believe this research project (an older instance of publishing follow-up results) was the subject of an Achewood comic to this effect. https://achewood.com/2016/04/15/title.html On the one hand: sure, it's useful to have some scientific, controlled grounding in the value of building community. On the other hand, any sad and lonely soul on the planet could probably have told us this without commissioning a nearly century-long research project.

I am reminded of an Achewood comic [1] about a Harvard study regarding love: "So maybe the next time you Harvard guys decide to study some Harvard guys ... just remember that for most folks the Maslow hierarchy tops out at lookin' in the bathroom mirror without drawin' an X in the steam." 1: http://achewood.com/index.php?date=04152016

From the article, it sounds like the same could be said about that dude as was said about The Notorious L.I.N.C.O.L.N., to wit, he gets with ladies but in the end they do not like him. (http://achewood.com/?date=01272003)

I can definitely recommend Achewood (21 on the buzzfeed article). It can take some time to get into it, and it has a distinct flavor that you might never learn to like, but if you do, it's amazing. I haven't really read any of the comics in years, but I still find myself using 'Achewood' language in some of my conversations. I rather like these two: http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=12282007 http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=01272003

I love me a good arithmetic/algebra review -- but in the end, I am not qualified to rub elbows with the geniuses of Mensa, as I lack the essential requisite domain-specific kitten/mitten training. References aside, I certifiably lack enough legit brains to step to Mensa's gatekeepers. But now I'm curious -- has anyone got any anecdotes of Mensa gatherings that defied stereotypes? Such as for example those alluded to in Mr. Onstad's synopsis of Mensa here: http://achewood.com/index.php?date=03222005

It seems to be a convention with several webcomics. I know Dinosaur Comics (http://chewbac.ca) and Achewood (http://achewood.com) do it, too.

It's funny. He bitches that MS Word has not improved since 1997. The 1997, hell, the 1990 version, had all the features he is asking for. The features were not hard to learn, and the thing has always come with a manual that is not hard to follow. All they've done lately is mess with the interface and make it so it doesn't freak out on large documents. creating documents with several sections that can easily be moved around Outline. Learn styles. just wants to type most stuff with single or double spacing and a comfortable serif font Default template. Again, styles. Does Word, say, have a scratchpad where you can save sections of writing to use later? How about a second document? mark where certain thoughts or paragraphs come from that will not turn your text into an unreadable jumble of pink “comments”? Toggle View Markup to hide the comments. What bothers most people is the behavior Word exhibits when you use it as a WYSIWYG word processor. It is based on a stylesheet and if you learn to use it that way it will not surprise you. http://achewood.com/index.php?date=05182004 "Thank you Microsoft Word for continuing to be a good program."

What I find funny is that Randall fell victim to exactly what he accused Jim Davis of a long time ago. Early XKCD was, if not necessarily brilliant, unexpected and often very clever in its jokes. I know one of its earliest influences was Achewood, which, for those of you who don't know, is the Webcomic To End All Webcomics, against which nothing but the best print comics compare. It was more effortless and came across as a comic trying to say something. His nerd jokes were occasionally actually really good. When they weren't, they came across with the air of "Fuck you, I'm not putting these comics online for you." Occasionally he'd hit upon a nice riff with his heartbreak comics, too, and his whimsical outlook towards life was a lot more sincere and less forced. Then he homogenized, began repeating joke concepts, and started spitting out a lot of derivative work, with only the occasional truly clever idea. It's never gotten worse than mediocre, but it's very frequently mediocre. I guess what I'm trying to say is all of you should read Achewood instead. The nerd jokes are better (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=09232002), it's funnier than any comic I've ever read (it's the comic that topped Calvin and Hobbes after seventeen years on the top of my list), and it's a real start-up, selling monthly premium updates rather than relying on any advertising whatsoever.

>If I ever meet the person that invented lookbehind correction, I’m not sure I’ll be able to restrain myself. your comment reminds me of this comic from the 2000s that became a bit of a meme back in the day swap out "comic sans" with "aggressive lookbehind correction" and it'd fit perfectly ;-) https://www.achewood.com/2007/07/05/title.html

For some reason, I'm reminded of a particular comic strip from Achewood - https://achewood.com/2007/01/11/title.html. "Fools! I have invented a usb device which can collect votes from the Internet and drive a knife through your heart!"

What a weird coincidence that I just read this comic https://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=05082002 a few minutes ago and started thinking about a practical version of it, then stopped over at HN and found this thread.

Given that the strip is now (ouch) almost 19 years old, it occurs to me that some folks may not have seen Nightlife Mingus' appearance in the web comic Achewood: http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=06202003
