This is a very detailed article. Most people do not appreciate how much work is put into building these digital maps, so it is great to see these kinds of articles. While not as detailed, for contrast I want to post how Nokia's HERE maps builds their maps. http://360.here.com/2014/11/17/made-usa-people-fargo-make-maps/ That is from the company blog. It shows a couple of our tools, but not nearly all. I work for HERE maps and my opinion is my own. I just thought that people might be interested in how other companies like HERE build maps. Despite all the automation (at both google and HERE), it is still a human intensive process and there are people on the other end making it as correct as can be. Also, I can't go beyond what is written on the public blog as I am not a company spokesperson.

Nokia/HERE (Formerly Navteq) — Chicago As an organization, we have a long history with map data. Now we’re looking at interesting ways to use it to change driving. Cars of the future (and present) have onboard computers, tons of sensors, and internet connections over the cell network. If you could hook that up to our map data, you could do some really cool things. To see what we’re up to, check out http://360.here.com/tag/connected-driving/ We’re looking for strong Java developers to make this happen. Experience with AWS, apache storm, stream processing or high volume, low-latency applications are all plusses. We're also looking for strong SDETs. The things I’ve enjoyed most since starting here a few months ago: - Interesting problem space - Interesting tech stack - I get to wear sandals to work (I chose to not take advantage of this particular perk today) - Team running group that goes for a run together every Wednesday morning before lunch (weather permitting) - Company gym - Quickly-growing team - Good medical insurance coverage - Starting a lunch time study group (with lunch provided by the company!) Interested? Questions? Email me at [email protected] I'd love to talk to you.

You switch out the map app like this, same way you change the default app for anything else: https://360.here.com/2015/01/29/swap-google-maps-here-android/ (The instructions for switching to, say, Google's own Waze app are pretty much the same too.) This is as I understand it not possible on Apple's iOS; even if you install a third-party mapping application, everything else on the system which opens up a map will still use Apple's map.

I would argue that you're half there. You'd have a car that could navigate roads, but ultimately it couldn't get you to where you want to go. Here has been dedicated on making maps at a quality level that is needed for automous cars. A few issues with the data that is available currently is that the data isn't very detailed, and you're at the mercy of volunteers (tiger(old), openmaps data), or for a company that's main focus isn't maps.
