What HN people wrote when they linked it

I submitted this recently but this is probably a good place to link to it too: http://1014.org/?article=468
Justin Frankel (Winamp, Gnutella, etc) writes that "Ideas are worth a lot to society, but not much to individuals. Execution is the opposite."

> Counterintuitively, it seems that under very light load, things work well, and under very heavy load, things work well, but for medium loads, there is failure. Also counterintuitively, the newer M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs, with more performance cores (6-8) and fewer efficiency cores (2), seem to have a larger "medium load" range where things don't work well.

This explains Justin Frankel's observations in the article above. It's a bit annoying there seems to be no way to force a process to only run on the P cores with no throttling. Having mostly bought a M1 Mac for music production, I keep running into this exact issue. Light workloads invoke more processing glitches than running loads of tracks and plugins at the same time.
Hopefully developers will eventually get more granular control of this for high-performance apps, battery life be damned.

Cool project, well done!
Reminded me also of the Jesusonic [0] FX processor, by Justin Frankel [1] of Winamp, SHOUTcast, REAPER, ...

Foobar is a better player today, but Winamp was so much fun till 2.xx. They had colour and great interfaces. They were the rock stars at the time of boring sotware UI. Then Winamp 3 and then 5, and AOL and UuUUUgghhhgh!
Nullsoft made some neat software, like NSIS...

Does anyone remember Sonique?

Along this line, I've always loved Nullsoft's "beep" program. It makes your (windows) computer sound like it's right out of a 70s movie.

It does get annoying, obviously.

Went down the Frenkel (Nullsoft founder) rabbit hole. Check out his forum where they've recently discussed AI bots scraping his forum [0]. Or his question submission page; he hasn't "left a reasonable question unanswered since 2009" [1]
> nothing specific against cloudflare, but the point of the internet is that it's decentralized and I'd hate to contribute against that (though we already do somewhat, hosting on aws etc). anyway our homegrown solution is working nicely these days! for now

Nullsoft had a tool called Beep[0] to do exactly that for fun purposes.

Very Nullsoft Beep.

There's nullsoft's beep: http://www.1014.org/code/nullsoft/nbeep/

This reminds me of the old Nullsoft Beep. Some of it was just fun, but the hum based on cpu usage was unexpectedly useful. Archived here: https://www.1014.org/code/nullsoft/nbeep/

Nullsoft (remember them?) had 'beep' which was always a joy to run.

Very cool but Bb doesn't seem to work right here: https://1014.org/_/sightread_bb.png

Justin Frankel from Winamp released a tool for fake movie sounds for Windows way back when, it's call Nullsoft Beep. Quite funny!
